Man of the match:Michael Owen
Has shone when playing in the hole and has scored six goals in as many games.
He was his side's most creative player, scoring twice and making chances for
others.

Steve Harper – 7 –
Had little to do until the second half, and when called upon The Magpies’
number two was more than equal to Sunderland’s shots.
Habib Beye – 8 –
The Newcastle right-back never stopped running throughout the game and was
a constant threat, particularly in the first-half when he had greater
freedom to push forward.
Amdy Faye – 7 –
Marshalled Jones effectively in the first half and was rarely troubled,
even as Sunderland began to push forward. Also made a vital block to prevent
Murphy’s goal-bound effort finding the net midway through the second half.
Steven Taylor – 7 –
Like Faye, Taylor was relatively untroubled and quelled the threat of Jones
in the first-half, though he allowed the striker space around the Newcastle
penalty area as Sunderland pressed for a goal in the second-half.
Jose Enrique – 6 –
The Spanish full-back has settled in to English football in recent weeks,
though he looked sloppy at times in today’s game.
Geremi – 6 –
The Cameroonian had an inconsistent afternoon. Some of his set-pieces were
inch-perfect, but his distribution in open play left a lot to be desired at
times.
Joey Barton – 6 –
The former-Manchester City midfielder had a reasonably quiet afternoon, his
most notable contribution being a thumping challenge on Miller as Sunderland
looked set to break away.
Nicky Butt – 8 –
Marshalled the midfield extremely effectively and was on hand to intercept
from Reid before the Sunderland man could unleash a shot.
Michael Owen – 9 –
The England marksmen’s goals will be the talking point, but it was his
movement and vision that sees him receive such a high-rating.
He finally looks comfortable at Newcastle and is thriving in the more
withdrawn role. His penalty was almost saved by Gordon, and he had other
chances to add to his total for the afternoon but he has regained much of
the pace that makes him so dangerous.
Mark Viduka – 7 –
The giant Australian-striker looked threatening when he received the ball to
feet in and around Sunderland’s penalty area, but he never really had an
opening to add to his season tally.
Obafemi Martins – 7 –
Martins’ pace allows him to attack down the wings and through the centre,
and it was through the various channels that Martins caused Sunderland
problems.
He linked up well with Owen, but will be disappointed he didn’t score when
he was clean through on goal in the second half.
Subs
Damien Duff (on for Martins after 70’) – 7 –
The Republic of Ireland midfielder looked lively when he was introduced
though Newcastle were more set on stopping Sunderland scoring than adding
to their tally.
Andrew Carroll (on for Viduka after 76’) – 5 –
The 19-year old made little impression on the game, though he helped
Newcastle to count-down the clock by winning several free-kicks.
David Edgar (on for Jose Enrique after 87’) – 5 –
had just seven minutes to make an impact, and needless to say, he saw little
of the ball.
