A youth football club, which helped hone the skills of a string of
famous players, is to receive the Freedom of North Tyneside.
Wallsend Boys' Club helped launch the careers of Alan Shearer, Peter
Beardsley, Steve Bruce and Michael Carrick, among others.
The borough honour is in recognition of the club's "factory line of
talent" and also its community work.
A ceremony is being staged at Wallsend Town Hall this evening.
Deputy mayor Jim Allan said the club had been an ambassador for the
north-east of England since its formation by employees of Swan Hunters
shipyard in 1938.
He said: "The club is a fine example of grass roots community enterprise
which harnesses the enthusiasm of our young people and channels it positively
to create a proud institution that is rightly recognised as a prodigious
'factory line of talent'."
The club currently has 22 football teams for boys and girls aged over
six.
