LONDON, March 9 (Reuters) - Pop icon Liam Gallagher of Oasis thinks
Robbie Williams is "childish" for challenging him to a fight and has
ruled out a boxing match, according to friends.
"There will be no fight, it's not going to happen," a close friend,
speaking to the Sun tabloid, quoted Gallagher as saying. "It's not
what rock and roll is about. It's all got very childish and pathetic
and I'll just let our music do the talking."
Williams issued his challenge -- which many have dismissed as a PR
stunt or simply bravado -- at last week's musical Brit Awards,
suggesting both put up 100,000 pounds ($157,000) and the winner
chooses which charity the funds go to.
Gallagher, currently in Japan, has yet to comment publicly on the
invitation to settle his differences with the top-selling solo artist
in the ring.
An Oasis spokesman said on Thursday Gallagher had "no comment" on the
Sun's report.
The pair are longstanding foes. Williams recently sent a wreath of
commiseration to the Oasis singer when the group's latest album was
released, while Gallagher dismisses him as "a fat dancer".
"So, anybody like to see me fight Liam? Would you pay to come and see
it? Liam, a hundred grand of your money and a hundred grand of my
money," he said while receiving his award for best single. "We'll get
in a ring and we'll have a fight and you can all watch it on TV."
But however far-fetched the fight may seem -- the British Boxing Board
has said there is no chance the pair could stage the fight any time
soon -- boxing promoters are queuing up to stage the match.
Bookmakers have even priced Williams, who has been endorsed by his
record company EMI, at 1-2 odds on favourite citing a "weight
advantage".

Although it seemed like just a joke at first, several British boxing
promoters have now come forward and offered to set up a boxing match
between singer Robbie Williams and Oasis singer Liam Gallagher.
Reuters reports that former welterweight champion Lloyd Honeyghan and
Panos Eliades, Lennox Lewis' promoter, have both said that they would
agree to line up contracts to make the match happen, as long as both
fighters are fit enough and agree to donate all the moneys to charity.
British oddsmakers have already made Williams a 2:1 favorite in the
hypothetical match because of his weight advantage, although the
British Boxing Council has indicated it wouldn't likely sanction a
match between Williams and Liam Gallagher anytime in the near future.
