Patsy "Gallagher" 12:18 Wednesday 8 March 2000 By Anthony Barnes, Showbusiness Correspondent, PA News Oasis look set to lose their grip on the top of the album charts after just one week - to the band set to support them on their US tour, Travis. Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, the first new Oasis album for two and a half years, sold more than 311,000 copies during its first week in the shops. But early sales figures for this weekend's chart reveal it has been eclipsed by Travis's The Man Who, an album which has already been in the charts for more than 40 weeks and has sold more than two million copies. Travis's sales are thought to have been given a boost courtesy of their double Brits win on Friday. They took two of the most important Brits by clinching best group and best album for The Man Who, the band's second album. Travis were given a major boost earlier in their career after being chosen to support Oasis on tour, a role they will fulfil again later this year on the US leg of the band's world tour. Almost all the acts given exposure at the Brits - either as winners or performers - will see a boost in their chart positions at the weekend, such as Tom Jones, Macy Gray and Stereophonics. In the singles chart, Bryan Adams is set to score his second number one with the single Don't Give Up which he recorded with dance act Chicane. His last stint at the top of the charts was in 1991 with Everything I Do (I Do For You) which had the longest unbroken spell at number one of all time at 16 weeks. It is set to depose Madonna's single American Pie on Sunday. c Press Association Midweek record sales show that Oasis are likely to be knocked off the top of the album chart by Travis, who've been in the chart for over 40 weeks and sold two million copies of ‘The Man Who’. Travis, who won ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best Group’ at last week’s Brits, are selling faster than Oasis, who sold just over 310,000 copies of ‘Standing on the Shoulder of Giants’ in their first week. Noel said he's been a fan of the group a long time, and thinks there's similarities between the two bands: "People say, ‘We hear your songs on the radio, and then after about four or five listens we really get into it’. That’s like with ‘The Man Who’. The more I played it, the more I loved it," Noel told Radio 1.
