Review......Triumphant return to stage at Murrayfield
Liam doesn't look back in anger at Murrayfield
Supergroup Oasis made a triumphant return to the UK on Saturday night
for their first concert since they stormed off the stage at a Swiss
pop festival.
A good-humoured, sell-out crowd at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh,
was praised by singer Liam Gallagher for chanting obscene songs about
pop rival Robbie Williams.
Reports from the Paleo Festival in Nyon on Wednesday night, where the
band abandoned their headline set after thirty minutes, suggested it
was pro-Robbie chants that prompted Liam to taunt the crowd -
triggering a hail of missiles.
The only missile that made it on to the Edinburgh stage was a
battered leather football, which songwriter Noel delicately chipped
into the crowd.
The band began their set with their chart-topping single Go Let It
Out before launching into Who Feels Love, both taken from their
latest album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.
However, it was classics such as Don't Look Back in Anger, Cigarettes
and Alcohol and Champagne Supernova which most excited the sell-out
56,000 crowd.
The concert is the last in the band's current UK tour, but they are
scheduled to play festivals in Reading, Glasgow and Leeds in August.
Their future as a group may still be uncertain, but the Scottish
crowd were thrilled at the band's first Scottish gig for nearly three
years.
As they closed with Rock and Roll Star, fan Paul Connelly, 28, from
East Kilbride, Glasgow, said: "Many people thought that Oasis had
burnt out, but tonight undoubtedly proved that they are the best band
in the world."
