Red Sox monitor Okajima's sore wrist
BOSTON -- Red Sox manager Terry Francona said left-handed reliever Hideki
Okajima, who has been nursing a sore left wrist, will be monitored over the
next few days.

"[It's] OK," Francona said of the reliever's wrist. "We're going to certainly
keep a close eye on him in the next couple of days. We'll see."

Okajima entered Wednesday's game in Baltimore with the Sox leading by one run
and the bases loaded in the seventh inning. He gave up a grand slam to Jay
Payton on his second pitch, the eventual game-winning runs. His four blown
saves lead the American League. Despite his 0.93 ERA, Okajima has allowed 11
of 14 inherited runners to score, or 78.6 percent, highest among qualified
American League relievers.

"Well, it may be a couple of reasons," Francona said. "One is regardless of
when you pitch, you have to execute pitches. The other thing is we put him in
situations like that so much because he's so good and if you don't get the
first guy out, if you come in with the bases loaded and you give up a hit, you
know. And that has been, he's given up some inherited runners with the way he
pitches against lefties, righties, with his split. He's an obvious candidate
to try to get out of messes because he's so good. When the guys you rely on
give up hits, sometimes you lose. That's part of the season, and I think
that'll get better.

Asked if he would prefer Okajima to enter games in clean innings, with no
runners on, Francona replied: "Oh, I would prefer everybody have clean innings.
That means nobody's on. That's not realistic."

Francona said the medical staff would continue to monitor Okajima.

"We'll monitor him [Saturday], see how he's doing," Francona said. "We've been
monitoring him. We always do."
