: on Sunday, with China skipping the closing ceremony.

: The Chinese, who also boycotted the opening ceremony, sent 68 athletes to
: Kaohsiung and won 14 gold medals. But the celebrations were a step too far
: for Beijing, despite a recent thaw in relations.
也杯葛開幕典禮的中國本次派出68位選手到高雄參賽，共贏得14面金牌，但這些盛典對
北京來說卻太遙遠，即使最近的兩岸關係有所和緩

: Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou, of the Beijing-friendly Kuomintang party,
: hailed China's low-key presence in the 11-day sporting extravaganza.
: 'We thank the Chinese mainland authorities for displaying goodwill to us,' he
: told reporters.
台灣總統馬英九（為與北京友好的國民黨員）向低調參加此一為期11天運動盛會的中國
揮手，他向記者說說：「我們感謝中國大陸當局對我們表達的善意」

: As it closed, around 2,000 athletes and volunteers swarmed into the stadium
: to thundering cheers from a capacity crowd of more than 40,000. Almost 6,000
: athletes from 103 countries and areas competed in 31 sports not included in
: the Olympics.
閉幕之際，約兩千名選手與志工湧入運動場而引起現場超過四萬名觀眾如雷的歡呼。有
103個國家與地區約六千名選手角逐31個非奧運比賽項目的獎牌。

: The defending champion Russia grabbed 18 golds, followed by Italy with 17
: golds. China was third, the United States fourth with 13 golds, and the host
: came seventh with eight gold medals.
衛冕國俄羅斯囊獲18面金牌，第二名的義大利獲得17金，中國排名第三，美國第四而得到
13金，而地主國獲得8金，排名第七。

: Analysts said China's presence at the event would not have been possible
: without the fast warming ties across the Taiwan Strait since Ma came to power
: last year, pledging to forge closer economic and cultural ties.
評論認為，如果不是馬去年當選總統使臺海關係昇溫以尋求更緊密的經濟文化連結，中國
不可能參加本次運動會。
: 'Although Beijing may have made concessions on some fronts, it won't budge a
: single inch while facing sovereignty issues,' Chang Hsien-Chao, political
: science professor at National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung, told AFP.
: Beijing still regards Taiwan as part of its territory awaiting reunification
: by force if necessary although the island has governed itself since 1949. --
中山大學政治所彰顯超教授對法新社記者表示：「雖然北京有可能在某些戰線上讓步，
但對主權議題卻不可能有任何退讓。」北京仍視臺灣為其領土的一部分而待統一，必要時
將使用武力，雖然這個島嶼從1949年起便已自我管轄。
