The free-agent signing period begins today, and it is expected that the
Orioles will be active in the bidding. Here's a look at some of the free
agents who could interest them and the players' 2008 statistics.
Emil Brown OF .244, 13 HRs, 59 RBIs Orioles are in the market for a
right-handed-hitting outfielder to potentially platoon with Luke Scott.
A.J. Burnett SP 18-10, 4.07 ERA Talented righty will garner tons of interest,
so we'll see how much he wants to pitch close to home.
Paul Byrd SP 11-12, 4.60 ERA In the quest for an innings eater, Byrd will
garner team interest for the second time in three years.
Orlando Cabrera SS .281, 8 HRs, 57 RBIs Some in the organization think
Cabrera's fiery personality is exactly what the club needs.
Adam Dunn 1B/DH .236, 40 HRs, 100 RBIs The O's are not expected to be a heavy
bidder, but what happens if Teixeira signs elsewhere?
Jon Garland SP 14-8, 4.90 ERA He has pitched 200-plus innings four of the
past five seasons, so he won't come cheap.
Cesar Izturis SS .263, 1 HR, 24 RBIs Maybe not the long-term answer at short,
but Izturis' steady defense is very attractive.
Edgar Renteria SS .270, 10 HRs, 55 RBIs Could be the fallback plan if Cabrera
gets a big deal elsewhere.
Mark Teixeira 1B .308, 33 HRs, 121 RBIs Even if Peter Angelos presents the
local boy with a blank check, will it be enough?
Gregg Zaun C .237, 6 HRs, 30 RBIs Nephew of Rick Dempsey would give the O's
veteran insurance if Matt Wieters falters.
