Three Orioles are finalists for Gold Glove Awards

For the second consecutive year, the Orioles have three players that are
finalists for the annual Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, which are given to the
best defensive players at each position in each league.

This year, catcher Matt Wieters is up for his second consecutive American
League Gold Glove Award, center fielder Adam Jones will be going for the
second (2009) of his career and shortstop J.J. Hardy is seeking his first.

The awards will be announced on ESPN2 starting at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Wieters, Hardy and right fielder Nick Markakis all made the finalists list
last year, with Wieters and Markakis winning their first Gold Gloves.

Markakis played just 102 games in right field this year due to injury and
will not repeat as a winner. The three right field AL nominees are Cleveland’
s Shin-Soo Choo, Kansas City’s Jeff Francoeur and Oakland’s Josh Reddick.

Wieters will be in competition with three other catchers: Detroit’s Alex
Avila, New York’s Russell Martin and Chicago’s A.J. Pierzynski. Jones is
competing against Los Angeles’ rookie phenom Mike Trout and Detroit’s
Austin Jackson. Hardy is going up against Texas’ Elvis Andrus and Seattle’s
Brendan Ryan.

Wieters, the defending winner, threw out 39 percent of would-be base stealers
in 2012, better than his 2011 mark of 37 percent, but he also made a
league-high 10 errors at catcher after making five in 2011.

Trout is considered the favorite at center field, but shortstop seems to be
fairly open with last year’s winner, Erick Aybar, not making the cut this
season. Hardy made just six errors in 158 games but isn’t as flashy as
Andrus or Ryan, who won this year’s Fielding Bible Award at shortstop while
making nine errors in 134 starts.

In defensive runs saved, Ryan is 27 runs above average, while Hardy is at 18
and Andrus, who made 16 errors this year, is at eight.

Hellickson, Tampa, Jake Peavy, Chicago, C.J. Wilson, Los Angeles; first base,
Adrian Gonzalez, (formerly of) Boston, Eric Hosmer, Kansas City, Mark
Teixeira, New York; second base, Dustin Ackley, Seattle, Robinson Cano, New
York, Dustin Pedroia, Boston; third base, Adrian Beltre, Texas, Brandon Inge,
Oakland, Mike Moustakas, Kansas City; left field, Alex Gordon, Kansas City,
Desmond Jennings, Tampa, David Murphy, Texas.
