So far this season no opposing starter has lasted more than six innings against the Orioles. The Birds are knocking pitchers out of the game by forcing them to throw a lot of pitches early. They're getting deep into the count before getting their hits. Ty Wigginton told me it's not by design. The deep counts are a direct result of patience. Orioles hitters are waiting for good pitches to hit. They're not deliberately taking pitches. If the first pitch of the at bat looks good, Wigginton says he'd swing at that just as fast. Bench coach Dave Jauss told me there's a misconception that the Orioles might be taking a lot of pitches because they take the Billy Beane approach to hitting which values walks and on base percentage. The O's aren't trying to walk. Walks are fine, but hitting is the focus. It's different from Beane's small ball philosophy which is built around manufacturing runs. The Oriole bats are hot, they're going for extra base hits or even better the home run. The O's hitters are taking pitches simply because they are disciplined and are making the pitcher throw to them. They're refusing to swing until they see a good pitch to hit. Coincidentally that's driven up the pitch count for opposing pitchers early in the game. Jauss said the Orioles approach is more in line with the way Hall of Famer Earl Weaver managed. Wait for the pitch, and when you see it, hit it. It's working. Right now the Orioles .290 team batting average is the third best in the American League. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.167.169.102 ※ 編輯: preblalithe 來自: 218.167.169.102 (04/19 00:12)
