1. Erik Bedard LHP…..24…..1999 (6) Norwalk CC
TEAM (LG) W-L ERA IP CMD K/9 oppBA
Bowie (EL) 6-3 1.97 68.2 2.1 8.7 0.173
Baltimore (AL) 0-0 13.50 0.2 - 13.5 0.500
MLE 6-3 2.38 68.2 1.7 7.1 0.197
Strengths: Command of 89-92 MPH fastball, 80 MPH curveball, and 79 MPH
change-up. Setting up pitches
Weaknesses: Movement of fastball. Stamina
Comments: He was on the verge of making the Orioles' rotation after
dominating Double-A, but ended up having ligament transplant surgery on
his ulnar collateral ligament. It took nearly two months to decide upon
the surgery date, so he'll likely miss most, if not all, of the 2003 season.
His ability to throw three pitches for strikes and out-think the hitter will
eventually pay dividends.
2. Luis Jimenez OF/1B…..L/L…..20…..2001 FA (Venezuela)
TEAM (LG) AB AVG OBP SLG HR SB EYE
Bluefield (APPY)) 176 0.375 0.474 0.597 8 9 1.00
Strengths: Bat speed, with power to all fields. Contact ability. Plate
discipline. Agility and size (6'4"/205#)
Weaknesses: Arm strength. Speed
Comments: Granted, he was only playing short-season baseball, but displaying
that kind of power, along with the ability to make contact and draw walks, is
extremely intriguing. He has enough defensive tools to handle a corner
outfield spot, although he'll likely lose what speed he has as he gets older.
It wouldn't be a stretch to see him make it to the high Class-A level in 2003.
3. Rommie Lewis LHP…..20…..2001 (4) high school (WA)
TEAM (LG) SV ERA IP CMD K/9 oppBA
Delmarva (SAL) 25 2.15 71.0 3.9 9.8 0.190
Strengths: Command and movement of 89-93 MPH fastball and curveball. Arm
action. Projectable body
Weaknesses: Deception and utilization of change-up. Repeating delivery.
Stamina
Comments: He drew plenty of notice for pitching 27.2 consecutive innings
of shutout baseball. His 6'6" height gives him a good, downward plane to
his fastball and curveball, and may be able to pick-up his velocity with
better mechanics and physical maturation. Though he was highly successful
as a closer, the Orioles fully intend on using him as a starter and will
do so in the Frederick (CAR) rotation.
4. Daniel Cabrera RHP…..21…..1999 FA (DR)
TEAM (LG) W-L ERA IP CMD K/9 oppBA
Bluefield (APPY) 5-2 3.28 60.1 2.8 10.3 0.223
Strengths: Command and movement of 91-97 MPH fastball and slider.
Competitive. Keeps ball down. Height (6'7")
Weaknesses: Tightness of slider. Deception of change-up. Maturity and
experience
Comments: An imposing figure on the mound for his size and velocity, his
fastball picked up a few ticks over the off-season and didn't yield a HR
all season. He loves to attack hitters, but his aggressiveness can sometimes
lead to his downfall. Experience should cure most of his ills and should be
able to pitch in a full-season league in 2003.
5. John Maine RHP…..21…..2002 (6) UNC Charlotte
TEAM (LG) W-L ERA IP CMD K/9 oppBA
Aberdeen (NY-P) 1-1 1.74 10.1 7.0 18.3 0.162
Delmarva (SAL) 1-1 1.36 33.0 9.8 10.6 0.175
Strengths: Command and movement of 89-93 MPH two-seam fastball and
slurve-type slider. Smooth, 3/4 delivery. Aggressive. Poise
Weaknesses: Utilization and deception of circle-change. Repeating delivery.
Need experience
Comments: He only tossed 43.1 innings, but if there were better base skills
than these, you'd be hard-pressed to find them. He has college experience and
a live arm, but is raw in his approach and his mechanics need refined. 2003
will be a pivotal season as he will be asked to throw the innings of a
starter. If his stamina falters, look for him to move to the bullpen.
6. Tripper Johnson 3B…..R/R…..20…..2000 (1) high school (WA)
TEAM (LG) AB AVG OBP SLG HR SB EYE
Delmarva (SAL) 493 0.260 0.348 0.416 11 19 0.70
Strengths: Bat speed, with power potential. Plate discipline. Arm strength.
First-step quickness and agility. Aggressiveness
Weaknesses: Long swing. Stiff hands.
Comments: He offers a little bit of everything offensively, with his ability
to drive the baseball (49 extra-base hits), draw walks, and run the bases.
His swing can get long, which might be a problem at the upper levels. His
defense is playable and could get better with experience. He'll do whatever
it takes to win and move up to the CAR in 2003.
7. Rich Stahl LHP…..21…..1999 (1) high school (GA)
TEAM (LG) W-L ERA IP CMD K/9 oppBA
Delmarva (SAL) 1-1 5.59 9.2 1.8 8.4 0.256
Strengths: Movement of a 90-94 MPH fastball and curveball. Projectable body
Weaknesses: Changing speeds. Inconsistent command. Repeating delivery.
Stamina
Comments: His shoulder continues to be the source of problems, as he missed
the first two months of the season recovering from surgery and was then
disabled at the end of June. His 6'7" height creates nice downward plane
of his fastball and curveball, but just lacks pitching experience. His
long-term viability decreases by the month.
8. Ed Rogers SS…..R/R…..24…..1997 FA (DR)
TEAM (LG) AB AVG OBP SLG HR SB EYE
Bowie (EL) 422 0.261 0.300 0.410 11 14 0.23
Baltimore (AL) 3 0.000 0.000 0.000 0 0 0.00
MLE 422 0.223 0.246 0.344 9 11 0.20
Strengths: Athleticism, with speed and moderate power. Arm strength. Range
and hands on defense
Weaknesses: Strike zone judgment. Contact ability against breaking and
off-speed pitches
Comments: His prospect status really took a hit over the off-season when it
was found that he was two years older than once thought. His defense has
always been fairly reliable, but did manage to be useful on offense by
driving the baseball and using his speed. He'll have to draw more walks
and improve his OBP if he wants to be a starter in the Majors. If not, a
utility spot is the best he can hope for.
9. Darnell McDonald OF…..R/R…..24…..1997 (1) high school (CO)
TEAM (LG) AB AVG OBP SLG HR SB EYE
Bowie (EL) 144 0.292 0.393 0.451 4 9 0.81
Rochester (IL) 332 0.289 0.353 0.433 6 11 0.41
MLE 476 0.263 0.328 0.395 9 17 0.49
Strengths: Athletic, with plus speed. Bat speed, with moderate power.
Arm strength. Range
Weaknesses: Pitch recognition. Staying back with swing
Comments: The first two months of the season were especially encouraging,
as he was exercising patience and driving the baseball, but wasn't as
impressive in Triple-A. Possibly one of the best athletes in professional
baseball, but just can't seem to put it together. He could end up as a
fourth outfielder, possibly in 2003.
10. Mike Fontenot 2B…..L/R…..22…..2001 (1) Louisiana State
TEAM (LG) AB AVG OBP SLG HR SB EYE
Frederick (CAR) 481 0.264 0.333 0.364 8 13 0.36
Strengths: Quick hands, with BA ability and gap power. Speed (4.2). Arm
strength. Range. Work ethic
Weaknesses: Plate discipline. Stiff hands
Comments: He packs plenty of punch from his 5'8"/165# body and loves to go
to the opposite field. His plate discipline went out the door in 2002 in an
effort to drive the ball, and lost several points on his BA and OBP. Playing
little ball and being more consistent on defense is what will get him to the
Majors and must start playing within his limitations.
11. Matt Riley LHP…..23…..1997 (3) Sacramento CC
TEAM (LG) W-L ERA IP CMD K/9 oppBA
Bowie (EL) 4-10 6.34 109.1 2.2 8.6 0.293
MLE 4-10 7.59 109.1 2.2 7.1 0.330
Strengths: Movement of 88-93 MPH fastball and curveball. Aggressive
Weaknesses: Frequency of change-up. Repeating delivery. Emotional maturity
Comments: It has taken him nearly two years to recover from ligament
transplant surgery on his elbow and is just now getting back, the zip on
his fastball and the hard break to his curveball. His mechanics still need
to be fine-tuned and his change-up is still considered below average. Expect
better numbers in 2003.
12. Bryan Bass SS…..B/R…..20…..2000 (1) high school (FL)
TEAM (LG) AB AVG OBP SLG HR SB EYE
Delmarva (SAL) 471 0.221 0.299 0.335 6 15 0.27
Strengths: Athleticism. Quick wrists and bat speed from both sides.
Projectable power. Arm strength. Hands on defense
Weaknesses: Making contact (146 K). Pitch recognition. First-step
quickness
Comments: The tools are here for him to be a solid hitter, as well as a good
defensive infielder, but until he makes better contact, he's going stall. His
body type may lend itself to more power, but may also force him off of
shortstop, especially if he loses any more quickness. He didn't prove that
he could handle low Class-A pitching, but may get a promotion anyway.
13. Val Majewski OF…..R/R…..21…..2002 (3) Rutgers
TEAM (LG) AB AVG OBP SLG HR SB EYE
Aberdeen (NY-P) 17 0.300 0.376 0.464 1 8 0.93
Delmarva (SAL) 110 0.118 0.158 0.294 1 0 1.00
Strengths: BA ability. Strike zone judgment. Speed underway. Average arm
strength. Range. Work ethic
Weaknesses: Hitting for power
Comments: The Orioles were pleased at his ability to put the bat on the ball
and his knack for recognizing pitches, but his swing may not be conducive to
hitting for power. He has spent most of his career in CF, but as he gets
bigger and stronger, his defensive tools may suggest the corners. As an
accomplished college hitter, the Orioles need to push him and may start
him out in the CAR in 2003.
14. Beau Hale RHP…..24…..2000 (1) Texas
TEAM (LG) W-L ERA IP CMD K/9 oppBA
Frederick (CAR) 8-8 5.02 131.0 2.9 5.4 0.285
Bowie (EL) 2-0 0.84 10.2 2.0 5.1 0.256
MLE 2-0 0.88 10.2 1.7 4.4 0.287
Strengths: Command of 89-94 MPH fastball and change-up. Holds velocity.
Smooth, high 3/4 delivery
Weaknesses: Slurve-type rotation of slider and curveball. Straight fastball.
Tends to overthrow. Getting strikeout
Comments: He is making progress with his pitching, but was supposed to be in
the Majors at this point. His fastball doesn't move much and his breaking
pitchers aren't sharp, but can change speeds fairly well. The Orioles need
to challenge him and hope that he responds with greater dominance.
15. Kurt Birkins LHP…..22…..2000 (33) Pierce JC
TEAM (LG) W-L ERA IP CMD K/9 oppBA
Delmarva (SAL) 9-7 3.51 143.2 2.2 6.4 0.245
Strengths: Command and movement of 87-91 MPH two-seam fastball, curveball,
and change-up. Smooth mechanics
Weaknesses: Arm speed on change-up. Need to get stronger
Comments: He isn't going to overpower anyone with his average fastball, but
has a quality curveball and can throw pitches just about anywhere he wants
to. This type of pitcher generally succeeds in the lower minors, but has a
tough time at higher levels with a mediocre fastball. He still has some
growing to do and hopefully, his fastball will gain a few feet. He'll head
the rotation at Frederick (CAR) in 2003.
