STORYLINES
History could be made tonight. Not only are the Pacers (58-21) one win away fro
m setting a franchise NBA record with 59 victories while tying the win total of
the 1969-70 ABA champions, they team could clinch the best record in the leagu
e -- and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs. The magic number was redu
ced to one when Sacramento lost to Minnesota Thursday night.
As any worthy goal should be, however, these will be difficult to attain becaus
e of the quality of the opposition. The Nets have persevered without two of the
ir biggest weapons in Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin, who have both been nursing
late-season injuries. New Jersey wrapped up its third straight Atlantic Divisio
n title and the No. 2 seed in the East this week and has won four of the last f
ive, including a 101-81 rout of Orlando Thursday night.

scoring 14 points and pulling seven rebounds.

the Pacers. Plagued by foul trouble, Jermaine O'Neal finished with 13 points a
nd 11 rebounds. The Pacers returned to New Jersey on Jan. 17 and notched a 90-8
4 victory behind a 20-point, 10-rebound night by O'Neal. Kidd starred again for
the Nets with 21 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds.
