Pacers don't move up in NBA Draft Lottery

Aside from Danny Granger's custom-made white jacket, there was nothing 
shocking about the NBA Draft Lottery for the Pacers. They left Secaucus, 
N.J., the same as they arrived – with the 10th pick.

除了 Danny Granger 訂做的白色夾克之外，溜馬在樂透抽籤會上並沒有什麼意外之處。

Now that they know which pick they have in the NBA Draft on June 24, what 
will they do with it?

"The draft is pretty deep this year but we're sitting in a good spot at 10," 
said Larry Bird. "There's a lot of good players, a lot of players I think 
will be playing for some teams next year – playing minutes, not just 
throwing them in.

In a lottery that otherwise went almost completely true to form, Washington 
jumped from the fifth slot to the top pick, with Philadelphia second and the 
Nets – who had the best odds at the No. 1 pick, winding up third.

# Keeping the pick. At No. 10, the Pacers could fill a need for a long, 
athletic big man from among a group of prospects that could include Patrick 
Patterson (Kentucky), Ekpe Udoh (Baylor), Donatas Montiejuanas (Lithuania), 
Greg Monroe (Georgetown), Ed Davis (North Carolina) and Hassan Whiteside 
(Marshall).

# Trading the pick in a package that would lure a veteran point guard to 
stabilize the starting lineup. New Jersey's Devin Harris has been mentioned 
as a possibility but Bird also came close to a deal with Charlotte last 
February that would've brought D.J. Augustin, and there certainly are other 
possibilities that have yet to bubble to the surface.

in order to further deepen the pool of young talent. The Pacers likely will 
have two second-round picks (they expect to receive either No. 50 or 57 from 
Dallas to complete the Shawne Williams trade), so they could reap a bountiful 
harvest from this draft.

Of those, the first two options appear the strongest.

Though the Pacers drafted a power forward last year and Tyler Hansbrough will 
effectively be a rookie in 2010-11 because of his extensive time missed due 
to injury and illness in 2009-10, Bird said that would not dissuade him from 
pursuing another frontcourt player this year.

儘管溜馬去年已經選了 PF，而 Tyler Hansbrough 因為傷病的關係，在 2010-11 也將

"Moving this franchise forward we need an athletic big, we need a point 
guard, we can always use help at different areas," he said. "We've got three

best players available. Just because we took a power forward last year 
doesn't mean we won't take an athletic big this year."

Because he already has a burgeoning stable of young players – five players 
aged 25 or younger – Bird might be more inclined to make a move for an 
established player. He won't make a move for a one-season benefit, preferring 
to acquire a player still heading toward the prime of his career.

因為已經有一群成長中的年輕球員 -- 有五名球員年紀在 25 歲以下 -- 大鳥可能傾向

"After Donnie (Walsh) left (in 2008), the first thing was to change the 
culture," Bird said. "The second was to get as many assets as we possibly 
could get in a short period of time, then try to take some of the assets, 
look around and see what we can do with them. You can't win with all young 
guys. At some point you've got to have veterans in here.

core group of young guys but you can't win with young guys. Sooner or later 
you've got to start looking for veterans."

However it happens, directly or indirectly, Bird is confident his first pick 
can be used to secure much-needed help for the 2010-11 roster.

"We're in a good position at 10 to get a player, there's no question about 
it," he said. "We're looking not only to next year but the future. We'll take 
the best player available."

感想：

基本上大鳥講的還是官話，不過多少可以讀出一點訊息。沒有抽到頭二順位，基本上就
等於保證今年選秀得選前場球員了，而大鳥目前看來打算也是如此。他一直提到交易找
來老鳥的可能性，而很可能是一名 PG ，不過他並沒有給定交易可能發生的時間點，也
許是今年，但也有可能等到 2011 年有薪資空間，能作的事情就會多很多。

雖說選秀上選天份不選位置是比較合適的策略，但連續兩年選同一個位置的球員，總是
讓我想到 2005 年選了 Danny Granger，2006 年又用同一個順位選了同樣是 SF 位置的
Shawne Williams。小威養不起來，不能 100% 歸因於搶同一個位置的因素，但多多少少
有點關係。而現在 Hansbrough 還沒證明到底能打到什麼程度，又選一個同樣位置的人
，最好的結果是兩個都養起來，一個可以拿去交易；壞的結果是定位不明，兩個都達不
到該有的成長水準。
