This normally is the time of year that a few unfamiliar players in orange start
to show up on the Suns' practice court.

The draft prospects, donning Suns gear for workouts, came in quartets starting
with the seniors in the past two Aprils. But in a year when the Suns could
draft three players in the first round, the NBA ruled out those visits until
after the May 29-June 4 Orlando predraft camp.

It's not that the Suns will be any less prepared. The visits are the last part
of the evaluation process after staffers David Griffin, Vinny Del Negro, John
Shumate and Todd Quinter spent a year traveling from colleges to Europe to
China to prepare for the draft.

The Suns have the 24th and 29th picks in the first round and would get another
choice if Atlanta's pick, owed to them from the Joe Johnson-Boris Diaw trade,
does not land in the top three in the May 22 draft lottery. The Suns have a
62.2 percent chance to get the pick at No. 4 or lower, with the fifth slot
being most likely as a 35.7 percent chance.

Griffin, the Suns' vice president of basketball operations, said there is a
50-50 chance the Suns would keep three picks.

"There is a likelihood that three young players are too many to bring in at any
one time," he said. "There's a possibility of that, but if the right players
presented themselves, I think we'd capitalize on that."

Mike D'Antoni, the 2004-05 Coach of the Year, finished fifth in the voting for
this year's award won by Toronto's Sam Mitchell. D'Antoni (22 points, including
two first-place votes) was far behind Mitchell (394), runner-up Jerry Sloan of
Utah (301), Dallas' Avery Johnson (268) and Houston's Jeff Van Gundy (134).

The Suns finished the season with only 40 player games missed due to injury,
the lowest total in the NBA.
