Leandro Barbosa hears the applause.
百步殺聽到了喝采聲。
He finds it a little unsettling.
他發覺了一點不安。
Not that the Suns guard isn't grateful. Not that he doesn't understand.
Flaunting it just does not fit his personality.
不是太陽的後衛給人囧，不是這個他不了解的事。拿這種事炫耀並不符合他的個性。
"I think what makes Leandro so endearing is he's so nice and innocent, he's
kind of awestruck by all the attention he garners," said Bill Duffy,
Barbosa's agent.
"我認為他會如此惹人喜歡是因為他這麼nice又單純。他是那種會為他所得到的注意力

Barbosa has found NBA stardom in his fourth season. He is the league's Sixth
Man of the Year. He is the Suns' second-leading postseason scorer.

He is the one trying to sneak out a side hallway to avoid reporters each day
after practice, not that he means to offend anyone.

"I'm a little bit shy, and my English is not where I want it to be," Barbosa
said with an apologetic shrug. "So I try to sneak out."

This is where Dan D'Antoni's pregame notes come in. You probably have heard
of the messages the Suns assistant coach leaves for Barbosa.

D'Antoni started the routine last year just to make sure Barbosa understood
his instructions. He did not want anything lost in translation.

"I used to write notes to my kids when they played for me so I wouldn't have
to yell at them," D'Antoni said. "With (Barbosa), I would write something

the language barrier, just in case there was a gap."

Everything since has fallen into place: Barbosa's English (it's not bad), his
game, his popularity. Not that everyone is surprised.

Earlier this week, Spurs guard Tony Parker said he and Barbosa share a
similar career path. Both came from outside the United States. Both were
young. Both had high expectations.

、都很年輕、都被賦予很高的期待。
"I came in the league when I was 19; I was so young," Parker said. "And at
21, people were criticizing me like they expected me to play like I was 28
and I had all that experience. You can't go that fast. You have to let the
player grow and mature, and now they can see the results with me and Barbosa."

This is how it translates into American sports culture: Last month, the Suns
announced that Barbosa would sign autographs at Paddock Pools, Patios & Spas
in Avondale. The event started at 7 p.m.

A family arrived at noon. By 5:30 p.m., more than 500 people stood in line.

Once Barbosa arrived, he was floored. All those people. There. Just for him.
By night's end, organizers estimated that 2,000 fans had come to meet the
Brazilian.

"I was very happy about that, and I was very sad I couldn't (sign) for
everybody," Barbosa said.

D'Antoni insists Barbosa's sincerity is not an act, and it would not surprise
him if Barbosa never changes.

"It doesn't have anything to do with (playing in a different) country,"
D'Antoni said. "That's just who he is. Anybody that's humble, when he's put
in the limelight, it takes a while to adjust. He's just beginning, but I
don't know if he was under the same microscope Michael Jordan was under that
he would ever be as comfortable, because that's not his nature."

Some people might fear the laid-back personality would transfer onto the
court. No need to worry, D'Antoni said.

"Leandro's a good kid that's tough," he said. "That's a weird combination. A
lot of kids will say, 'If he's really nice, well he must be soft.' No. He's
all of that with an edge. That edge will propel him, and I think that edge
has gotten him to where he is."
