Amare good at drawing fouls when scoring inside

The Spurs have limited the Suns' long-range shooting in this Western
Conference semifinal series, but that doesn't mean getting three points isn't
an option.

The Suns center - named First Team All-NBA on Thursday - is among the best in
the league at scoring in the post while drawing a foul. He collected two
three-point opportunities within 45 seconds to help prevent a San Antonio
second-half comeback in Game 2.

"I have a scorer's mentality," Stoudemire said. "When I get the ball and I

The old-fashioned three-point play is a momentum-changer, especially during
the postseason, when stakes are high. It counts the basket, punishes the
defender and ignites the crowd.

This season, it has become a play the Suns can count on, not much different

"He's the best I've seen, and I don't use that superlative a lot," Suns
assistant coach Marc Iavaroni said of Stoudemire. "I played with Moses
Malone, Karl Malone and Artis Gilmore, and I think Amare's the best finisher
of the group."

"A lot of guys are just trying to roll it in or shoot a soft shot after
they're fouled," Lanier said. "Amare's trying to throw it down and impress
upon you that he's in control. He accentuates the ending. He gives you a
Kodak moment. And I like that about him. I like that passion."

Three-point chances come in bunches for Stoudemire. He had three against
Memphis in January. Seven in back-to-back games against Denver and Portland
in February. Four more against Dallas in March.

Iavaroni remembers two against the Lakers in April, when Stoudemire showed
resilience.

"He's 2 of 11 or something. LA's done a great job of clogging up the lane and
Amare takes two hits, both fouls, and finishes both with bank shots,"
Iavaroni said. "Most guys would have said, 'I don't have it tonight. I can't
throw it in the ocean.' But Amare kept working."

Stoudemire's work does not go unnoticed.

D'Antoni said. "He's been hit, and (defenders) hold him down and the ball
still goes in. Very few people can do that."

Steve Nash credits Stoudemire's strong hands.

Iavaroni credits his hand-eye coordination. Stoudemire, the coach said,
doesn't have to worry about the catch. Once he has the ball, he simply
focuses on finishing.

The key according to Stoudemire: simply not shying from contact.

since I've been in the league," he said.

It leaves defenders with few options.

"You have to catch him before he jumps, because once he takes off and he's in
the air, he's too athletic and strong," Lakers forward Lamar Odom said
recently. "And his focus is incredible."
