Christmas Day began with ABC/ESPN analyst Bill Walton (a definite relation
to Los Angeles forward Luke Walton) boldly pronouncing that the Lakers had
now bypassed the Mavericks and Suns to become the second-best team in the
Western Conference behind the defending champions in San Antonio.

在聖誕節當天，ABC/ESPN 的球評Bill Walton大膽的發表聲明，湖人的戰績將會超越
小牛與太陽，變成西區戰績第二的隊伍，僅次於防守強隊馬刺。

Then the Lakers went out and showed why Walton’s argument is getting harder
and harder to snicker away.

Smush Parker isn’t running the point around here anymore. Kwame Brown isn’t
manning the post. And Kobe Bryant isn’t asking to be traded — at least not
this week.

For the second time in as many meetings, the Lakers handled the Suns team
that has ended their season the past two years, getting 38 points from
Bryant, 28 points and 12 rebounds from the emerging Andrew Bynum and plenty
of help from a stronger supporting cast as they manhandled Phoenix 122-115 at
a holly, jolly Staples Center.

Center Amaré Stoudemire, who pronounced himself “ready” for a rematch with
the Lakers after Phoenix was embarrassed in their home opener on Nov. 2,
was outplayed by his 20-year-old counterpart in all phases. Bynum hit the
Suns where they have been and remain the most vulnerable, exploiting their soft interior defense
for layups and dunks.

阿罵說他已經準備好了，要對本賽季第一次，那場難堪的對戰中，重新的復仇。

Afterward, Stoudemire sounded the alarm, probably as much for himself as his
teammates.

“It’s tough to deal with,” he said. “You don’t want (Bynum) going off
for career highs in different categories. They did a great job of looking for
him and finding him in spots where he was probably going to be open. We have
to do a better job as a team to stop guys. We talk about a lot of different
things, but we have to go ahead and do it. “Time is out for excuses, or to
point fingers. It’s time to go ahead and do it.”

This game was much closer than the previous game, a 119-98 boat race in which
the Lakers led by 33 points. Neither team led by more than seven points until
Bryant, who had 26 points in the second half, took charge down the stretch
and carried his team home.

這場的戰況比兩隊本賽季的第一次交手，更加來的刺激。但可惜的是，在第四節的後半段
節奏的掌控，太陽似乎有點失了以往的水準。

But the Suns have gotten used to beating the Lakers, both in the regular
season (10 of 12 going into this season) and playoffs (two first-round wins),
and the reversal of fortunes is a source of concern and frustration.

Steve Nash tried to keep the Suns close with 24 points — including five of
Phoenix’s 10 3-pointers — and 14 assists. But as is often the case when
Nash has to wear too many hats on offense, the Suns had some long scoring
droughts while the Lakers always knew where to go for some easy production.

On pick-and-rolls, “They are just able to throw it up to (Bynum), and he’s
finishing,” said Suns guard Raja Bell, who returned to the lineup and
contributed 15 points in 33 minutes. “It adds another dynamic to their team,
obviously, and we’ll have to figure out a way to counteract that.”

Indeed they will, because the days when the Suns can just put up 115 points
and outscore Kobe are gone. The Lakers’ five starters combined for 114

14 rebounds), Derek Fisher (19 points, six assists) and Trevor Ariza (14
points, including several crowd-pumping dunks) all supplied nails to Phoenix’
s coffin.

“We are aware of the standings, but we also know that last year we were 10
games over .500 and moving along and then injuries slayed the dragon,” said
Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who donned a snappy, professorial-looking bow tie
to mark the holiday. “We just have to play every game and not think about
anything else.”

The Suns don’t have that luxury. Their 19-9 record is good enough to keep
them among the Western Conference elite, but the list of unexpected losses
and uninspired efforts is growing. “You can look at it like that, say the
glass is half-empty,” Suns forward Grant Hill said. “But we also haven’t
played that great, and we are still right there. We are due for a little run.
It would have been nice to start (Tuesday). But now we have to start it
(Thursday against the Clippers).”

太陽戰績19-9，這個戰績使得太陽還是佔據著太平洋組的第一。但太陽最近在一些意外
的比賽中落敗，且一些起伏的表現，使得這個戰績，並不是讓人感到滿意。
