Trade Brewing In Backcourt?
____ ___

The Phoenix Suns did the only logical thing they could think of on
Tuesday. For a team that desperately is in need of size and help in
the frontcourt, they decided to add another guard. Yuta Tabuse - bidding
to become the first Asian guard in the NBA - signed a contract with
the Suns to come to training camp and make his best bid to make the
team. The Japanese player measures only five feet eleven inches, but
he proved in summer camp that he has the energy and the ballhandling
to make a difference.
"Yuta earned the opportunity to sign this contract because he has now
proven in two consecutive summers that he can play at the NBA level,"
Suns president Bryan Colangelo said. "Yuta will get every opportunity
to make our team and perhaps this shot at the league will work out for
him. He has a great feel for the game and pushes the ball up the floor
extremely well. He really has the ability to electrify an audience."
Last summer Tabuse played on Denver's summer team and was one of their
last cuts in training camp. He possibly would have made the team if
they didn't already have the diminutive Earl Boykins to team with
Andre Miller.
Tabuse downplayed the size issue in his Tokyo press conference, saying
he has always played with bigger players and still had some success,
but one question needs to be asked: If Tabuse is really that good and
can bring about changes in the flows of an offense like Colangelo says
he can - then are the Suns looking to make a trade? They already have
three other point guards in Steve Nash, Leandro Barbosa, and Howard
Eisley. They also have Quentin Richardson, Joe Johnson, and Casey
Jacobsen that can play the shooting guard spot.
How many guards is enough?!
The cynic in me wants to say the Suns signed Tabuse just to be training
camp fodder, but I don't think that's true. They really do seem pleased
with what he brings to a game and let's be honest here - there is no way
he could bring less than Eisley. While he isn't going to be a scorer he
probably is a better true point guard than Barbosa (who can swing to the
two spot), so maybe this addition is the precursor to bigger things?
Maybe a trade is brewing for a big man?
Maybe the ideal here would be to just buy Eisley out of his contract so
they can have his roster spot. We know Richardson and Nash aren't going
anywhere and the team isn't big on the idea of moving Barbosa or
Johnson - but with seven guards and only six other players under contract
who play the other three positions they are a bit heavy in the backcourt.
So what's the deal - is Tabuse training camp fodder or a legitimate
addition?
