LEGENDARY COMIC STRIP PEANUTS TO BE IMMORTALIZED ON
NEW U.S. POSTAGE STAMP
Charles M. Schulz’s Family to participate at Mall of America Unveiling
Newspaper readers across the country may be asking who will get the honor
of representing PEANUTS when the U.S. Postal Service pays tribute to the famed
comic strip on a new commemorative postage stamp next year. Will it be Charlie
Brown, his dog Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder or Pig-pen? PEANUTS fans
worldwide will find out Sept. 30 when the Postal Service unveils the stamp
design at a 12 noon ceremony held in the Rotunda of the Mall of America in
Bloomington, Minn.
The PEANUTS stamp will be issued in 2001 to commemorate the comic strip
PEANUTS, which celebrates its 50th anniversary on Oct. 2, 2000."The 'PEANUTS’
stamp is a wonderful reminder of the genius of Charles M. Schulz and of the
simple yet effective way in which comic strips reflect both the‘good’and the
‘grief’of our everyday lives,”said Deborah K. Willhite, Postal Service
Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy, who will
unveil the stamp.
ꄠ "This stamp also furthers our commitment to grow the hobby of stamp
collecting by continuing to offer a diverse and interesting stamp program,”
she said. Joining Willhite at the stamp unveiling ceremony will be the
children of Charles M. Schulz.
PEANUTS focuses on the anxieties and joys of childhood as expressed by an
ensemble cast of children who often seem wise beyond their years. Among them
are the lovable Charlie Brown, who perseveres despite continuous failure; the
philosophical, blanket-carrying Linus; the fussbudget Lucy, who dispenses
psychological advice for a nickel from behind a concession stand; and
toy-piano virtuoso Schroeder. Central to the comic strip is Charlie Brown's
dog, Snoopy, who first stood on his hind legs in 1958 and became extremely
popular for his imaginative adventures as a number of characters.
Born in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1922, Charles M. Schulz began his fascination
with comic strips early, reading the Sunday comics from four different
newspapers with his father each week. With encouragement from his parents,
Schulz enrolled in a correspondence course in cartooning. PEANUTS debuted in
syndication on Oct. 2, 1950. On Feb. 12, 2000, Charles M. Schulz died in Santa
Rosa, Calif., of complications from colon cancer, only hours before his last
original PEANUTS strip appeared in Sunday papers.
