For more information, please read the Press Release from the Office of Congressman Mike Thompson below. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 22, 1999 Thompson Sparks Congressional Effort to Honor Peanuts Creator Lawmaker Drafts Legislation to Award Charles Schulz with Congressional Gold Medal Washington, DC ---Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA) announced today that he will introduce legislation authorizing the President to present Peanuts creator Charles Schulz with the Congressional Gold Medal. Created in 1776 and first awarded to George Washington, the Gold Medal is the highest honor Congress can bestow upon an individual. Thompson, who represents Schulz in his Northern California Congressional District, said the honor is fitting for a man whose lifetime of work has transcended generations of Americans and has become a fabric of our national culture. "For 50 years, Sparky Schulz has given our nation a unique sense of optimism, purpose and pride," Thompson said. "Be it through the Great Pumpkin Patch, the Kite Eating Tree, Lucy's Psychiatric Help Stand or Snoopy's adventures with the Red Baron, he has transcended human vulnerabilities, emotions and potential. It is only right that we thank him as a nation through this prestigious honor." Charles "Sparky" Schulz created the Peanuts comic strip in 1950 and has personally drawn every single strip over the past 50 years. His characters and words appear in 2,600 newspapers in 75 counties and reach 355 million readers every day. Schulz's TV special, "A Charlie Brown Christmas," has run for 34 consecutive years. In all, more than 60 animated specials have been created. Four feature films, 1400 books and a hit Broadway musical about the Peanuts characters have also been produced. Schulz, who is a longtime resident of Thompson's Northern California Congressional District, is known locally for his generous philanthropy a well as for his artistic and cultural legacy. Two thirds of the members of both the House and the Senate are required to co-sponsor the legislation before it can be voted on. Thompson is urging readers to contact their own member of Congress to request cosponsorship. He has already received bipartisan support from lawmakers in Illinois, Nevada, New York, Louisiana, New Jersey, Tennessee and California.
