PEARL JAM HELD "MORLLY RESPONSIBLE" FOR ROSKILDE, Jul 19, 2000
It's been reported that Danish police are holding Pearl Jam "morally
responsible" for the disaster at this year's Roskilde rock festival where
nine people died after suffocating at the front of the main stage.
A police investigation does not blame the organisers for the tragic accident
but does claim that the rock band may have played their part. Roskilde
Deputy Chief Constable, Bent Rungstrom, said: "We have spoken to numerous
witnesses who have told us that Pearl Jam are well known for almost appealing
for violent behaviour."
Another police spokesman added: "Whipping a crowd into a frenzy is appalling
under conditions like those at the festival, where the ground was slippery
and visibility was poor due to vapour in the air from many thousand people
sweating."
More than 280 witnesses were interviewed for the preliminary report, which
was delivered to the Danish Minister Of Justice, Frank Jensen, on Wen.(Jul,17)
The report also condemned "crowd-surfing" and pointed out that it is a
phenomenon closely connected with Pearl Jam.
When the tragedy occurred on Jun.30, the band's singer Eddie Vedder appealed
for fans to calm down and move back. Once Vedder realised that his pleas were
ineffective and that people were dying, he fell to his knees and cried.
The band immediately released a statement saying that their lives
"would never be the same again."
而PJ的經紀人Kelly Curtis回應如下:
Pearl Jam are well known for their exciting live shows, but they have
never, in their 10 year history of performing, "appealed for violent
behavior."
Further, while "crowd surfing" is an audience "phenomenon" closely
connected with many rock bands who are currently performing, it is not
one that is encouraged by Pearl Jam.
As the band's manager, I find it hard to believe that after all that has
transpired, the band's devastation over the tragedies that occurred
at the Roskilde Festival during their performance, and their long history of
attention to fan safety, that anyone would assign "moral responsibility"
to them. That, I find "appalling" and ludicrous.
Pearl Jam has always, and will continue, to do everything possible
to ensure that their shows, and shows they are a part of, are safe and
enjoyable for those who attend.
