The Myths (Or Truths) of Touring With A Rock Band
This past year's Pearl Jam tour reminded me once again of the myths,
or perception by others, of life traveling with a popular rock band.
Either by talking with old friends and family, or by meeting new
people/fans while on tour, I'm sometimes led to believe that the life
of the Roadie( It's okay that I use that term, but don't you! ) is
glamorous -it's money paid to hang out and "party" with the band.
Boy, do I wish it were like people want to believe it is!
On one hand, it's a good reminder to all of us traveling with the
production that we have unique jobs - jobs that plenty of people
would like to have. On the other hand, it's proof that there are some
skewed ideas out there in need of correcting. ( No doubt perpetuated
by rock myths, or stories told on some over-the-top episode of
Behind The Music.) So, since I received good feedback on the
subject matter in Ask George last newsletter ( Various Road Crew
Job Position ), I figured that sharing my "life of a Roadie" perspectives
might be something of further interest to you. Let's see if I can actually
make the unglamorous seem somewhat interesting…
First off, let me acknowledge that the opinion I'm going to give are
mine alone. I don't say that as any sort of legal disclaimer, I just
mean that every crew person's touring experience is a little different,
and mine is solely one of having traveled exclusively with Pearl Jam
for the better part of ten years. Perhaps if I worked/traveled with
other artists, my perception would be slightly different - not all bands
operate or live life like Pearl Jam. That said, items pertaining to the
band's production or logistics are fairly typical throughout the industry
and can be applied, in principle, to most touring bands on the
popularity scale of Pearl Jam.
