Myth #2…The crew is best friends with the band members.
Believe it or not, there are some people in the traveling crew who might
not ever meet the band members while we're on tour. Other crew
people I know have told me that's the case with some artists they've
been on tour with. On PJ it's a relatively small entourage of people,
and the band aren't egotistical assholes, so it's more of a family vibe.
However, we're all out there to work first, socialize second. On a PJ
tour, though, the backstage Ping-Pong tables are the primary place
of band/crew interaction. There's no distinction made between band
members and crew when it comes to dominating at Ping-Pong!
Naturally, there are those of us in the crew that work more directly
with the band members, and/or have been part of the PJ organization
for any number of years, so we do have some amount of friendship
with them. However, for most of us it's unlikely that while we're on
tour we'll see the band anywhere other than at the venue on a show
day. The band travels separately from the crew and usually stays in
different hotels. But in general, very few crew people get to know
the band on a true friendship kind of level.
