Myth #4…"All that equipment travels with you?! Everywhere?"
Yep. As silly as it sounds, it is a common response from people.
Next time you're at a concert take a few minutes to really look around
and notice everything on the stage, the sides of the stage, hanging
above and behind the stage, and positioned in the middle of the
audience. For PJ, everything you see - lighting, P.A., monitors,
backdrops, guitars, amps, drums, barricade, etc. - and some things
you don't see, all travel with us as regular part of our production.
Pearl Jam doesn't own all this equipment - most of it is rented for
the duration of a tour - but it does travel with us from city to city.
For the Binaural tour, we had enough equipment to fill five semi-
trucks, and that's a relatively small number of trucks compared to
a lot other band's production.
About the only thing that doesn't travel with PJ is the stage itself. The
venues themselves provide this for us (at a cost) based on specification
PJ's Production Manager gives to the local promoter well in advance
of the show date. However, there are some bands that do carry their
own staging with them if their type of production requires it.
