The versions of the Brandenburgs usually heard today are those of the
presentation set, but this recording makes use of a number of manuscript
copies, some dating from shortly after Bach's death , which, by dint of
having "bypassed"the Brandenburg versions, may reasonably be taken to be a
closer reflection of the concertos as they were actually performed by the
composer and his colleagues in Coethen. Differences occur most noticeably
in Concertos Nos. 1 and 5. The Coethen version of No. 1, actually entitled
"Sinfonia", has only three movements instead of the more familiar four,
and there is no Polonaise section for strings in the final movement.
In addition, the Brandenburg's solo piccolo violin part is an extraction
from the original Coethen texture, which is a tidier one in which the
strings are balanced by a group consisting of oboes and bassoon, with a
pair of horns "in the middle". Another interesting divergence is in the
rather Grainger-like countermelody provided for the violins in the second
Trio of the Sinfonia's last movement; in the later version this is replaced
by a more military-sounding line for oboes.
