Halladay wins sixth after Phillies honor Roberts

It was a game the late Robin Roberts would have approved of, and not simply
because nine innings on a cloudless Thursday afternoon resulted in a 7-2
Phillies victory.
The greatest righthander in Phillies history was prolific for completing games
- 305 of them, to be exact. The majors' active leader in complete games, Roy
Halladay couldn't accomplish the feat against St. Louis, but shook off his
manager's hook in the seventh inning to put aside the Cardinals on his 119th
pitch of the day.

Jayson Werth, who calls Springfield, Ill., his hometown, as Roberts did, had
three extra-base hits, including a three-run homer in the first inning to
provide all the support Halladay needed. After Werth touched home plate, he
pointed both hands to the sky to honor Roberts, who had died Thursday morning.

"I don't usually do that sort of thing," Werth said. "But definitely Robin
was on the thoughts and hearts of many people today. Coming around third, I
definitely had him on my mind, and that was definitely big ups to Robin right
there."

Roberts' white No. 36 jersey hung in the home dugout at Citizens Bank Park
as the Phillies improved to 17-11, tying their high-water mark of six games
over .500 for the season.

They beat the Cardinals with pitching - Cole Hamels, Kyle Kendrick and
Halladay each worked at least seven innings. For Halladay, the sterling
performance is expected each time out. But Thursday, things didn't exactly
go his way for the first time in 2010.

In the fifth with runners on second and third, Halladay thought he had Albert
Pujols struck out to end the inning, but plate umpire Mike Everitt called
ball three. Pujols took the next pitch to walk.
Halladay reached a 3-2 count to Matt Holliday with the bases loaded, and
struck him out on a 79-m.p.h. curveball. Catcher Carlos Ruiz pumped his fist,
and ran off the field with the rest of the team.
Halladay walked toward home plate. He wanted to speak with Everitt.

"My only question was I felt like some of those pitches we were getting
earlier in the game," Halladay said. "It would be nice to get a couple in
big situations. That was really it. You're never really disputing whether
they're balls and strikes."
"You don't attack him," Halladay said. "I didn't feel like I was questioning
him. I knew they were close pitches that probably could have gone either way."

In the seventh, Halladay allowed a run-scoring single to Pujols, and Manuel
emerged from the dugout with a sure hook.
"I said, 'OK, Roy, here I am. Where you at?' " Manuel said. "He said, 'I'm
fine. I can get this guy. I want him.' "

So Manuel left him in. On the next pitch, Halladay's 119th of the day,
Holliday grounded out to second.
Halladay didn't finish what he started. It was good enough for win No. 6.
