First-baseman Sweeney gets his playoff shot after trade to Phillies

MIAMI – Although the trade deadline came and went on the last day of July,
the Phillies have been known to keep a close eye on the waiver wire, where
players can be claimed, and then, acquired in a trade.
Among notable players the Phils have acquired in waiver trades: Jamie Moyer
(2006), Jeff Conine (2006), Scott Eyre (2008) and Matt Stairs (2008).

Five-time All-Star Mike Sweeney joined that list Wednesday. The Phillies
acquired the 37-year-old veteran from the Seattle Mariners to help fill
the void at first base left by injured slugger Ryan Howard. The Phillies
will send Seattle either a player to be named or cash considerations,
general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Wednesday.

He can hit, he could always hit," Amaro said. " He gives us a little
more thump off the bench from the right side. And while Ryan is out he

"I don't know if we had to do something, but this certainly helps because
it gives us a bona-fide major-league hitter who has had a ton of success.
He’s a great makeup guy. I just talked to him and I think he's pretty
excited about getting a chance (to come here)."

Sweeney has never appeared in a postseason game in 16 major-league seasons.
His 1,428 games trails only Randy Winn (1,674 games) and Michael Young (1,456
games) for active players who have played in the most regular-season games
without reaching the playoffs.

“I think he views this as a pretty neat opportunity,” Amaro said.

"He is going to be really excited because he’s a guy who’s really excited
about the sun coming out in the morning," said Raul Ibanez, who played with
Sweeney for three seasons in Kansas City. “So once he gets here i this
environment, he’s going to be really excited. He’s a force for positivity.
He brings positive energy everywhere he goes, in everything he does … he's
one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel recalls watching Sweeney when he was managing
in Cleveland and Sweeney was with the Royals. Those recollections were enough
for him to nominate Sweeney as his regular replacement for Howard the next
two weeks.

"I don't see anyone beating him out. He'll start," Manuel said. " But
(Ross) Gload might play some first base, too. Sweeney is a good hitter. I
haven’t seen him in a couple years, but he knows how to hit and he's got
power, too. He might like Citizens Bank Park.”

Sweeney is a career .298 hitter who appeared in five All-Star games with the
Royals, including four straight, from 2000-03. He hit .340 in 2002 to finish
second to Manny Ramirez in the American League in average.

Sweeney, however, hasn’t been an everyday player since 2005 and has been
limited to 280 games in the last five seasons due to a variety of injuries.
Sweeney has played in only 30 games this season due to back spasms.

        史溫尼是個著名的痛痛人  今年又在背痛...

Sweeney also had surgery on both of his knees in 2008.

"He has been cleared to play medically," Amaro said.

        ㄚ馬羅表示  在醫學上來說  目前的他  一來就可以上場 ...
