Mayberry's debut exceeds his dreams

A few minutes after John Mayberry Jr. walked into the Phillies' clubhouse
on Saturday, Matt Stairs gave him the full rookie treatment."Hey Junior,"
Stairs said, reclining on a couch, "I need a coffee and three creams."
Mayberry smiled and was excused from fetching the coffee.

There would be other smiles before the day was over, like when Mayberry saw
his name in the starting lineup posted on the wall, when he rounded third base
after belting his first career home run into the left-field seats at the new
Yankee Stadium and when his teammates, led by Jimmy Rollins, gave him the
silent treatment when he got back to the dugout.

大概昨晚 麻省有偷偷告訴Mayberry 他們一定會來這老梗 XD

"It was incredibly exciting, more than I ever imagined," said Mayberry,
a slugging 25-year-old outfield prospect. "In my wildest dreams, this
definitely didn't happen. You can't draw it up any better than this." Well,
maybe a little better. Mayberry's three-run homer in the fifth inning against
Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte gave the Phillies a 4-1 lead. But closer
Brad Lidge blew the save in the ninth inning, and the Yankees celebrated a
walk-off, 5-4 victory.

The outcome didn't make the day less memorable for Mayberry. Called up Friday
night from Class AAA Lehigh Valley to provide another right-handed bat for the
last two games of the series with the Yankees, he batted eighth, played right
field and became the first Phillies player to notch a homer for his first
major-league hit since Chase Utley on April 24, 2003.

"When we talked about bringing somebody up, I told them I wanted Mayberry,"
manager Charlie Manuel said. "I figured this would be a good time to put him
on some left-handed pitchers up here, bring him up, give him a chance.
Of course, any time your first hit in the big leagues is a home run, how can
you beat that?" Said Mayberry, who added a seventh-inning double, "My memory
is a bit fuzzy until I got around third base. Until then, it was a whirlwind."

Mayberry's father, John Sr., hit 255 home runs during his 15-year ML career.
He flew here from Kansas City to attend the game. In an amusing moment, Fox
identified the wrong man as Mayberry's father before correcting the mistake
and interviewing John Sr.

In a bit of symmetry, the elder Mayberry hit the last homer of his career at
original Yankee Stadium, a three-run shot on Aug. 8, 1982, 16 months before
John Jr. was born. "I didn't know that actually," John Jr. said. "Now that
you mention it, it's pretty cool."
老五月爹 這輩子最後一發全壘打 也是在前洋基球場打的
"我自個兒都忘了 現在你提醒我 嗯這(巧合)的確很酷!"
