PHILADELPHIA -- For more than four hours on Oct. 20, 1993, the Phillies and
Blue Jays duked it out in a record-setting World Series game at Veterans
Stadium that is remembered as one of the worst losses in Phillies' history.
Brian Schneider was there.

"I was sitting right in dead center, underneath an overhang," said Schneider,
who still recalls the intermittent rain, Jays starter Todd Stottlemyre's chin-
scraping slide into third base, Lenny Dykstra's two homers, and the 15-14
outcome. "Being a Phillie fan, I had the pennants and everything else. It
wasn't a casual thing."

Although Schneider has been a major-league catcher for the past 10 years and
has moved from his hometown of Northampton, Pa., signing a two-year, $2.75
million contract with the Phillies on Tuesday was cause for him to rejoice.
He'll finally wear the Phillies colors.

"There are so many Phillie fans in our family, getting a hit or two against
the Phils, I always would get nasty e-mails or texts," Schneider said,
standing in the clubhouse at Citizens Bank Park. "This is good now. It's
good to know we're all going to be on the same side now."

Schneider, 33, is expected to replace Paul Bako as the backup catcher behind
Carlos Ruiz. According to a person familiar with the negotiations, he'll make
$1.25 million in 2010 and $1.5 million in 2011.

In 10 seasons with Montreal, Washington and the New York Mets, Schneider has
batted .251 with 59 homers and 356 RBIs. Like Bako, he's a left-handed hitter
and known for his defense and game-calling.

Last season, Schneider batted .218 and missed 41 games with injuries. He
finished strong, batting .409 (9-for-22) in September, and doing solid work
behind the plate. Since his major-league debut in 2000, he has thrown out 183
runners, the highest of any NL catcher.
