Phils honored at White House

Jimmy Rollins heard the advice, and considered it. But his citizenship
ultimately trumped hesitancy, and he campaigned last autumn for the
presidential candidate he believed in, Barack Obama.
去年這一肉公開幫歐巴馬拉票 有人勸他運動員最好別碰政治
"Sports and politics," the Phillies shortstop said at the White House today,
tacitly acknowledging the many disincentives for professional athletes who
become engaged and risk unpopularity and a loss of endorsement dollars.
"They tell you don't do it. But at the same time, I'm a U.S. citizen first."
不過這一肉認為他也是美國公民 只要認為是對的就奮勇向前
Sports and politics comingled comfortably today, as the Phillies visited
President Obama at the White House and received congratulations for their
2008 World Series championship. After touring the building, players and
staff met the President in the Oval Office before joining the Obama on the
South Lawn for a brief ceremony.

Those new to the team this year, including Raul Ibanez, Chan Ho Park and
Jack Taschner, were not invited; all current Phillies who participated in
last year's postseason chose to attend, as did Senators Bob Casey and Arlen
Specter. At the end of the ceremony, Rollins presented the 44th president
with a Phillies jersey with the number "44."

In his speech, Obama thanked Rollins for his support, and praised those
Phillies who use their fame and money to address social ills. "Jimmy Rollins,
who I have to say made some telephone calls on behalf of our campaign before
the election, and I couldn't be more grateful to him for that," Obama said.
歐巴馬感謝這一肉在競選期間的起義相挺!
"Chase [Utley] works on behalf of pediatric hospitals. Brad [Lidge]
supports our wounded warriors. Cole [Hamels] helps those suffering with
HIV/AIDS in Africa. Ryan Howard is a national face for the Boys and Girls
Clubs, participates in the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and takes an active role
in mentoring inner-city students."

While honoring the Phillies for their achievements on the field, Obama made
time to highlight the problems of race that persist both in the United States
and in baseball. As inequalities in education, housing and other services
plague society, baseball struggles to with its own lack of diversity.
According to a study conducted by Univ. of Central Florida Institute for
Diversity&Ethics in Sport, blacks comprised only 10.2 percent of all major
leaguers in 2008. The statistic recently provoked Los Angeles Dodgers second
baseman Orlando Hudson to say that Jackie Robinson "would probably turn over
in his grave."

"As the number of African American kids taking up baseball is in severe
decline, the impact of having role models like Ryan and Jimmy to look up to
just can't be measured," Obama said.

Aside from the serious issues, Rollins and the president were able joke about
sports. "I asked him where the basketball court was, and he told me, 'I got a
foot on you,'" Rollins said. "I told him, 'I'm too quick.'"

Also in his speech, Obama noted the April 14 death of broadcaster Harry Kalas,
which postponed the Phils'visit, and the passing during last year's postseason
of manager Charlie Manuel's mother.
"Harry left us as he lived," Obama said. "In the ballpark, preparing to call
another game for his beloved Phillies...I lost my grandmother in the middle
of my election. And, Charlie, I admired your perseverance during those trying
times. I know how hard that must have been on you."

歐巴馬表示 他能體會 像他競選期間 祖母也是剛好往生...
"I appreciated that," Manuel said afterward.
"That was very special. That was very important to me."
