It's not easy for Pistons to acquire 'franchise' player

One line of questioning to Pistons president of basketball operations Joe
Dumars at Wednesday's season-ending news conference got me to thinking about
several conversations I had with several reporters this season.

Dumars was asked whether he would try to acquire a centerpiece to his
rebuilding efforts this off-season and he said that’s easier said than done.

“It’s so hard to get those guys because they make life so much easier when
you have that type of guy as you can see with the Boston series right now,”
 Dumars said of the Celtics struggles against the Bulls in the first round
without Kevin Garnett. “If that opportunity presents itself, I would jump on
it in a heartbeat. But in light of that, you can’t just sit around and say I
wish I had one of those guys. You got to go out and load up on those guys
that are as close to No. 1 as possible, be as deep as you can with as many of
those guys as you can.

His comments echoed what we concluded about the NBA: There aren’t that many
true franchise players in the league.
他的說法似乎隱含著: 聯盟中這種真正的極品其實沒幾個。

My definition of a franchise player is one (if interested) who can get a team
to the playoffs with just a bunch of guys from the YMCA. I’m exaggerating of
course, but not by much.

There’s another group of aging guys like Shaquille O’Neal and Tim Duncan
who were once franchise players.
還有些年紀增長的傢伙，像是Shaq、Duncan 他們也曾經是極品


Ming who are close, but got to show a little more to reach the upper-echelon
class.
有些傢伙很接近極品，但可能還差了點。像是Dwight Howard、CP3、Yao

That’s it.

“When you have that guy, that one guy, that No. 1 guy and I’m talking about
the real No. 1,” Dumars said. “Sometimes people confuse your highest-paid
player with No. 1. That’s not the case.

About the only sure-fire way to get one of those guys is to bottom out so
badly that you get a high draft pick.
