If you think the Pistons will make a big move by the NBA trade deadline this
week, ask yourself this:
如果你認為交易截止日前活塞將會做出大動作的交易，先捫心自問：

Trades, like cold medicines, tend to fall into two categories: fast-acting
and long-lasting. Teams either try to help themselves now or put themselves
in better position later.
交易就像「斯斯」一樣有兩種：一種是短期立即見效、一種是為了長遠的未來著想。
團隊總是試著讓自己能夠現在、未來都更好。

The Pistons are caught in between. President Joe Dumars has tried to achieve
one of the toughest tasks in sports -- go from one successful era to another
without ever being bad.
而活塞現在剛好藉於兩者之間的尷尬期。

Dumars' plan, clearly, is to acquire a superstar in the next 16 months. The
only potential superstar on the market this week is Phoenix's Amare
Stoudemire. But the Suns have a high asking price, and Stoudemire is under
contract only through 2009-10. It would be risky to acquire him for only one
full season. So don't expect the Pistons to land Stoudemire this week.
老杜的計畫很顯然的是希望在接下來的16個月想辦法搞到一個全明星身手的傢伙。
就本週的觀察而言，目前放在檯面上比較大尾的魚只有太陽的Amare Stoudemire。
但太陽相對要求高額貼水才願意放人，而Amare的合約在走完09-10年的球季後，他

This year's Pistons have been, by any standard, a disappointment, and every
day, it gets tougher to imagine them rising to contention this year. There is
no way Dumars will sacrifice the future for the present. That wouldn't make
sense.
今年一路跌跌撞撞的活塞，無論以任何標準來審視都是令人失望的。每一天都越來越難
想像到底哪天才會走出陰霾。老杜不可能會為了保住他的烏紗帽而犧牲活塞的未來，這

But would he sacrifice the present for the future? That's not so easy to do,
either. If Dumars wanted to give up one of his current rotation players, then
it must be asked:

Allen Iverson and Rasheed Wallace obviously are not important parts of the
Pistons' future. Yet they are not going anywhere. With every passing day,
they hold more value for the Pistons. Well, OK, they don't hold more value,
but their contracts do. Combined, they are making more than $35 million this
year (I hope they don't spend it all in one place), and that money comes off
the books this summer. The Pistons created a bit more cap room by trading
Alex Acker to the Clippers on Sunday for a swap of future draft picks.
雖然AI與溪蛙現在還沒離開活塞，但顯然他們兩人不會是活塞未來的重要支柱。

Trading Iverson or Wallace almost certainly would mean giving up cap space.
Dumars would rather give up his house.

Rip Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey are the backcourt of the future. The whole
point of this plan is to find a superstar to play with those guys.

Like almost everybody else in the NBA, the Pistons are eyeing the 2010
free-agent class, which could include LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo
Anthony, Joe Johnson, Stoudemire, Tracy McGrady and Chris Bosh, among others.
But while everyone talks about who the Pistons might acquire, let's ask
another relevant question:
就像現在NBA中的其他球隊一樣，活塞也希望在2010年的自由市場撈一票。這年會端出

The Pistons won't wait until 2010 to try to acquire one of those guys. It is
possible they make a big move this summer.

Consider: If you're Toronto -- and from where I sit, you certainly don't look
like Toronto, but hey, let's pretend -- then you will try to sign Bosh to an
extension this summer. But suppose Bosh is fed up with the Raptors, who have
the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference, and he turns down the
extension. Toronto would have two options: hope to sign in 2010 -- and risk
losing him for nothing -- or trade him this summer.

那你將希望在今年暑假和Bosh續約，但假設Bosh翅膀硬了、想飛離現在東區倒數第二

That is where the Pistons would come in. They could offer Bosh a chance to
play with Stuckey and Hamilton on a future contender. But in order to trade
for Bosh (or any other star in this scenario), the Pistons need to stockpile
all their assets now.
那就是為什麼活塞有機可趁。活塞可以提供一個讓Bosh和RIP、小史在未來合作的機會。
如果一定要簽下Bosh(同理適用於其他上述球員)，活塞勢必要趁現在多累積些籌碼。

That means guys like Tayshaun Prince, Amir Johnson and Jason Maxiell are
potential trade chips this summer. And that means they are unlikely to get
traded this week, too.
也就是說像小王子、Amir、Maxy這些人將會是這個夏天很有淺力的交易籌碼。
換句話說，這些人在這個星期以內一臉看起來就不太像要被交易的樣子。

So the Pistons you have watched for the past three months -- the maddening,
tantalizing, frustrating Pistons -- likely will stay intact for the rest of
the season. You might love that and you might hate it. But you ought to get
used to it.
所以你在過去這三個月所看到如此令人抓狂、折磨、沮喪的活塞 -- 這季大概不會有
太大的陣容改變。你也許為此高興、也許為此幹液濃稠... 但你總得習慣。
