Chuck Daly: Cut from the finest silk
抽絲剝繭Chuck Daly

Chuck Daly was the first coach of a pro sports team I dealt with on a daily
basis. This was back in 1986 and the Pistons were a team – and an
organization, really – filled with alpha males. Jack McCloskey, the
firebrand general manager. Isiah Thomas, the mercurial point guard. Bill
Laimbeer, the brash center.

It didn’t stop there, either. Vinnie Johnson always thought he would have
been an All-Star if someone would have made him a starter. Adrian Dantley was
no shrinking violet. Dennis Rodman arrived as a floppy puppy who clung to
Daly as a father figure. John Salley loved the spotlight. For all of their
competitive fire and all of their professionalism, you would not call the old
Bad Boys a low-maintenance bunch. They were not all like Joe Dumars.

Yet Daly handled all of those massive egos and disparate personalities with
whatever is three steps beyond equanimity.

And I made the rookie mistake of thinking all pro coaches handled people so
deftly.

More than two decades later, after dealing with coaches in all four major
professional team sports, I’m still waiting for someone to join his company.

On Friday, the Pistons announced, at the request of the Daly family, that
their Hall of Fame coach, class of ’94, has been diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer at age 78.
星期五活塞在 Daly 家人的請求下宣佈，他們的名人堂教頭在78歲這個年紀被診斷出罹
患了胰臟癌。

I always cringe when I hear or read that someone fights cancer heroically,
because that implies those who are taken quickly somehow didn’t fight hard
enough or were something less than heroic. I’m not sure how you fight
something you can’t see or comprehend, something that’s clobbered the best
and brightest who’ve been chasing a cure for generations.
當我聽到或讀到某人英雄對抗癌症時總是畏縮，因為那暗示那些很快就被死神召換回去

But whatever dignity there can be in dealing with the scourge of pancreatic
cancer, one of the most aggressive and virulent members of an especially vile
family, Chuck Daly will muster. The man stood at mid-court in Boston Garden
for a Game 7 when it had to be 104 degrees courtside on a Saturday afternoon
in late May and never sweat a drop, never had a strand of his perfectly
coiffed hair step out of place.
但不管要用什麼樣的尊嚴去面對這最折磨人的胰臟癌，這個癌症家族中最具侵襲性且
致命的成員，Chuck Daly一定會鼓起勇氣的。這個在當年五月尾聲，星期六下午球場

Cancer might beat him, but it won’t cow him.

“He’s going to fight this, no question,” Pistons longtime trainer Mike
Abdenour said. “He will handle this with grace and dignity and fight it to
nth degree.”

It was Daly’s unparalleled ability to dance coolly above the flames that
made him the perfect choice to coach the Dream Team, the 1992 Olympic team
that was the first to incorporate professionals into the mix.

USA basketball probably had no idea now right they got that one.

“There were some huge egos there,” Palace CEO Tom Wilson said. “You never
heard a bit about them. Somehow you had to manage all that stuff with a goal
toward winning and managing minutes for guys who all felt they were the best
player in the world. It was perfect. Plus the persona – Daddy Rich, the
smooth operator. The image was perfect for that group of guys. The best coach
in the world and the best group of players.”

Now, the likelihood is that team was so far ahead of the rest of the world
that it didn’t need a coach at all to win the gold medal, but I’ll suggest
that one large reason that team is remembered with such universal respect is
because with Daly in charge, it went about its business without incident,
without the hint of in-fighting or ego clashing.

“His gift was his charm, I think,” Wilson said. “He used to always say, ‘
The best thing I have going for me as a coach is my ability to go deaf.’
 Because people would come off the floor complaining about being taken out,
swearing at him, he’d just ignore it and move on. His sense of perspective
was always amazing and his ability to talk to you like you were the only
person in the room. And that’s what he did with players.”

“I played behind Joe Dumars and Isiah Thomas and I was having a real good
game and Chuck pulled me out,” said Pistons assistant coach Darrell Walker,
who played under Daly during his last season as Pistons coach in 1991-92. “
As I walked past the bench I started cussing him out. ‘Why do you have to
take me out of the game, Chuck, damn. What are you doing?’

“Chuck didn’t say anything, then about a minute later he walked down to me
and said, ‘You get it all out of your system, D-Walker?’ I just busted out
laughing and told him I was sorry. But that’s what he meant by having
selective hearing. You can’t react to everything players say in the heat of
the moment. He had great wisdom. I learned quite a few things from Chuck,
things that I keep with me to this day.”
「Chuck 什麼也沒說，過了一分鐘後他走向我說，『D-Walker，你完全失控啦。』我
忍不住笑出來，告訴他我很抱歉。但這就是他選擇性聽取的用意。你不能對球員在氣
頭上時的每件事都做反應。他有很棒的智慧。我從 Chuck 身上學到了一些事， 這些事
到現在我都還記著」。
