The dust is still settling, but even as it falls you could start making out the
outline of the Eastern Conference’s big picture – and it looks an awful lot
like the snapshot you might have taken two or three months ago.

Cleveland would be the obvious answer, given the four-game losing streak they
inflicted upon the Pistons to end their season. But the Cavs went into a draft
longtime NBA watchers judged one of the deepest and potentially star-laden of
this generation without a pick and emerged without anyone to add to a roster
that still looks like it has too many holes in it.

Personality issues aside, how Randolph and Eddy Curry co-exist makes for
fascinating conjecture.

owes him $61 million over the next four years. And we haven’t even considered
the defensive deficiencies a Randolph-Curry tandem represents.

Boston’s deal for Allen made a big splash and, to be sure, the Celtics are a
tougher win today than they were a week ago for making it. But did Danny Ainge
really do anything to better position the Celts for future title contention by
dealing the No. 5 pick in a studded draft and take back a 32-year-old shooter
with a pretty daunting injury history and $51 million coming to him over the
next three years? Not in my book, he didn’t.

first round if the matchup is favorable. But unless a big-time frontcourt
defender and scorer falls into their laps, that’s about the Celtics’ ceiling
for the few years of a productive Allen-Pierce tandem.

Michael Jordan would have been better off keeping Brandan Wright – an
extremely athletic young big man who would have been a nice complement to Emeka
Okafor – and using the cap space he spent absorbing Richardson’s contract on
his own Gerald Wallace plus a mid-level veteran.

the perimeter unaddressed.

Pierce-or Allen-type scorer. New Jersey spent lavishly to retain Vince Carter
– hard to see the Nets getting better.

expect increased contributions – perhaps dramatically increased – from Jason
Maxiell and Amir Johnson.
