Pistons point guard Chauncey Billups knew the stakes when he became a free
agent on July 1.
    當活塞控衛槍蜥在七月一號成為自由球員後，他就很清楚知道利害關係。

He had watched his friend and former teammate, Ben Wallace, struggle after
bolting to Chicago last year. And Billups, like Wallace before him, had built a
cozy relationship with this basketball-loving, hard-hat and lunch-pail region.

conference in Birmingham about his decision to remain with the Pistons. "I
think I embody a lot of that, too. I think that's why (the region) embraced me.

With an identity established, a family that had planted roots and a team he
still thinks can compete for championships, Billups never really considered
leaving.

"I've got some history here," he said. "You guys have seen me grow from a

athletes who came, starred and stayed. Guys like Lions' Robert Porcher, or his
boss, Joe Dumars.

He chatted with the media at the Birmingham Country Club, host course of The
Children's Center 23rd Annual Celebrity Golf Classic: An Afternoon with
Chauncey Billups and Friends. The event is one Billups hopes will further
establish him in the community, and continue to set a precedent for his
post-basketball future.

Dumars joined Billups at the charity event to discuss the re-signing.

"It was a no-brainer," Dumars said of bringing Billups back. "There wasn't a
second thought. You have to look at his body of work, look at who he is as a
person. It's hard to find guys like that. It's hard to find guys who are great
players, great people, represent what you want."

Billups said he still hasn't gotten over losing four straight games to the
Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals.

"It hurts, man," he said.

Billups struggled in that series, averaging more turnovers than assists.

"I didn't adjust fast enough to the way they were playing me," he said. "We had
some other things that I don't want to speak about that hurt as well."

Billups said losing that series only made him want to remain in Detroit more.

"You guys probably think I'm crazy," he said, "but I still feel like we were
the best team out there, even though we didn't display that."

Now, he gets another chance.
