Pistons' rookies get life coaching
Joanne C. Gerstner / The Detroit News
原作者信箱:joanne.gerstner@detnews.com
AUBURN HILLS -- The to-do list was long when Pistons rookies Rodney Stuckey,
Arron Afflalo, Sammy Mejia and Cheikh Samb arrived in Metro Detroit over the
past few months.
Rodney Stuckey,Arron Afflalo,Sammy
The players had to get up to speed with the Pistons' playbook and conditioning
requirements.
Off the court, they needed to start building their new lives.
Find a place to live. Buy furniture and housewares. Figure out where to buy
groceries and bank.
It's time for the guys, whose ages range from 21 to 24, to start living in the
adult world.
"It is a big adjustment, you've got a lot of stuff to do that you've never had
to do for yourself before," said Afflalo, who turned 22 last week. "When you're
in college, a lot of this stuff isn't necessary, or it's taken care of for you.
Now you've got to get insurance for stuff, make decisions on things you've
never bought before.
"But I've been handling it, as the other guys have, too, and everybody here has
been really helpful."
The Pistons provide a support system for the rookies, helping them acclimate to
Metro Detroit and the NBA. Ryan Hoover, the team's director of player
development, serves as the main conduit and big brother.
Hoover, a native Detroiter and former Oakland University basketball player, has
done everything from help with apartment hunting to spending three hours at Bed
, Bath & Beyond shopping for pots and pans.
"From the moment these guys get drafted or sign, I want to make sure they are
put in contact with every thing or service that can help them feel more
comfortable here," Hoover said. "I think all of us here want to make them feel
right as home, as quickly as possible."
Operation set-up
The rookies received their first NBA paychecks Tuesday. The Pistons gave them
an advance when they came to town, which helped them get houses, apartments,
cars and groceries.
"It's exciting to get paid, but I'm not going to go out and do anything crazy,
" said Stuckey, 21, who has the highest salary of the rookies -- $1.56 million
this season. "I'm going to be responsible in everything I do. I've been on my
own for a while, so I've had to deal with some parts of this already."
Samb, who turned 23 Monday, and Mejia, 24, are scheduled to make $427,163, if
they make the final roster. Afflalo will get $944,520.
Stuckey purchased a condo, and Afflalo bought a house. Samb and Meijia went
for furnished apartments.
Samb's needs have been the most complicated of the rookies.
Samb, a native of Senegal, speaks fluent Spanish and French. His English is a
work in progress, but he's making attempts to improve. The Pistons have
enrolled him in classes to help him learn English.
"I am trying," Samb said, in his heavily French-accented English. "I work hard
and I get better."
His older brother, Mansour, lives with him. Mansour is fluent in English and
serves as Samb's support system.
"It's kind of hard right now, but he's coming along," Mansour, 40, said.
"There is a lot of things he's getting used to, like learning English and how
to be here (in the United States). There are so many steps he needs to take
because he is so young. But I think he is very eager to learn everything, as
it will help him be better as a basketball player.
"For me, I already have my reward for helping him -- I am seeing him here and
being very happy."
Samb is quite busy, he's taking driver's education -- in Spanish. He is also
trying to bring his wife, Anta, to the United States. Immigration paperwork
is under way to grant her a visa.
Playing house
Most young adults/recent college grads come to their first jobs and new lives
with a mish-mash of hand-me-down furniture and well-used housewares.
Dishes, towels, blankets, comforters, coffee makers and the like usually need
to be purchased. Afflalo has already made a smart move as a homeowner, hiring
lawn care and snow removal services.
Afflalo
All is going well, except for one area: This crop of rookies isn't going to
make the cut for "Top Chef."
"I'm terrible at buying groceries, that's been the worst part for me, because
I tend to buy too much junk food and bad stuff," Mejia, 24, said.
"I don't know how to cook. So unless I can put it in a microwave, or throw it
on a George Foreman grill, I can't cook it. I know that's not good."
Afflalo added, "I like to eat, but I don't like to cook. I'm not going to
starve, but it's not going to be a real gourmet dinner with me. I'll have to
figure this out as I go."
╮╯▽╰|||╭
Stuckey has culinary help, thanks his mom, Faye Stuckey, and pseudo-stepmom,
Diane McElhinney, making frequent visits. The two moms cook up freezable
feasts, allowing Stuckey to eat well for days.
"That's how you do it," Stuckey said, tapping his index finger to his temple.
"They cook 10 times better than anything I can do. So it's good to have them
come in and visit me. That's a veteran move."
