Pistons focus on pick-and-roll

AUBURN HILLS -- Start with this: The pick-and-roll, when it's executed
properly, is virtually an indefensible play. That's why it has been the
staple of most NBA offenses.

Then add this: Nobody plays pick-and-roll offense better than the Utah Jazz,
and no Jazz duo since Karl Malone and John Stockton played it as well as
Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer did Sunday.

"They are absolutely the best at it," Chauncey Billups said Monday after a
two-hour, back-to-basics practice. "They eat, sleep and drink that system,
and they are the best at it. The system is great. It's like the Denver
Broncos and their running backs. You can plug in anybody into that system and
be successful. And that's not to take anything away from anybody who played
it."

You think back to when Carlos Arroyo played point guard for Utah and had the
best year of his career, and you see Billups' point.

"Our league has become a middle pick-and-roll league," Pistons coach Flip
Saunders said. "I would say 80 percent of what teams do initiates or ends
with the middle pick-and-roll. Defensively, you can't pin the ball to one
side. It's hard to trap it. Usually the guy setting the screen is a guy who
can really shoot the ball, or he's a guy like Boozer who can hit the
18-footer and roll to the basket."

But even if you throw Utah out of the discussion, Detroit knows it has to do
a better job defending that play -- starting Wednesday night when LeBron
James and Cleveland come to The Palace.

"What makes that play difficult against Cleveland is they run it with LeBron
and a small forward usually covers LeBron," Billups said. "Small forwards are
not used to guarding pick-and-rolls, and that's a play that's tough enough to
cover for guys who are used to defending it."

The Pistons have had success defending the pick-and-roll in past seasons, and
they've defended it well at times this season. Overall, the Pistons are fifth
in the NBA in field-goal percentage against and seventh in points allowed.
活塞在過去幾個賽季都有防守擋拆的成功經驗，而今年到目前看來也沒什麼太大問題。總
的來看，活塞在被得分命中率是全聯盟第五低，而被得分也是全聯盟第七少。

"You just have to keep changing up and try to keep them off-balance," Billups
said. "Our initial pick-and-roll defense has been good. The guy comes off,
and we have it under control. But then they re-pick and run another
pick-and-roll, and we will be in a different coverage, maybe we've switched a
small guy on a big, or we've trapped, and another guy is open on the wing.

In recent weeks, the consistency of their starting lineup also as been
disrupted by illness and injury. The starting unit has been intact for six of
the 13 games this season.

"The way we are built, offensively and defensively, all five guys have to be
on the same page," Saunders said. "We have had starters out, and with some
new guys in, we haven't quite been on the same page. Guys don't understand
the rotations as much, and when we have a breakdown, it's been glaring."

Saunders also pointed out that when the Pistons have struggled, they have
struggled first and foremost with their point-guard play.

"We put the ball in the point guard's hands, and they are the decision-makers
for the offense, and they are the first line of defense," Saunders said. "If
we have good guard play, we are successful. If we don't, we are going to
struggle."

In four of Detroit's five losses, the opposing point guards did most of the
damage. Jarrett Jack of Portland scored 20, Jordan Farmar of the Los Angeles
Lakers made four steals and scored 10 in a 41-point fourth quarter, Beno
Udrih of Sacramento had 23 points and Williams of Utah had 21 points and 14
assists.

Richard Hamilton was at the practice facility but still wasn't feeling well
enough (flu-like symptoms) to practice.
Rip - 已經開始加入練習，但是感冒的症狀還是讓他狀況不太好。

Rasheed Wallace (sore left knee) sat out a large portion of the practice but
did some drill work.
Sheed - 酸痛的左膝讓他大半的練習時間都坐在場邊，但還是做了些簡單的練習。

Both are expected to play Wednesday.
兩人都被期望可以在星期三上場。
