To find the root of Jason Maxiell's uncanny leaping ability, his freakish
athleticism and all of the hustle plays he makes for the Pistons, you must
start with his childhood days in Carrollton, Texas, and Hazel Crest, Ill.

Maxiell's 6-foot-7, 260-pound frame is a product of countless hours in the gym,
plus a healthy diet he has followed since he was a kid.

"Growing up, he ate a lot of spinach and drank a lot of milk," said his mother,

"My grandfather was a big influence," Maxiell said. "He was the type of guy who
worked hard at everything he put his mind to. He helped me out tremendously
growing up, working hard and just following in his footsteps."

And that athletic ability on display more than 82 nights per season? Patricia
Maxiell says it came naturally. She recalled when Jason was 9 or 10 and playing
rec basketball. She told her son that he needed to be more aggressive if he
wanted rebounds.

Watching Maxiell nightly, it's evident he ignored that last piece of advice.
Now in his third NBA season, Maxiell's constant hustle has made him a regular
in the Pistons' rotation -- and a fan favorite. He's the team's super sub,
capable of changing the course of a game the moment he steps on the floor.

Entering Tuesday night's game at Memphis, Maxiell was averaging 8.9 points, 6.2
rebounds and 1.6 blocks in just more than 23 minutes per game. He's a pain for
opponents but a joy for fans and teammates.

He was a raw talent at Newman Smith (Texas) High, always upbeat and willing to
learn from anyone. Percy Johnson coached Maxiell during his senior season and
said it remains one of the most enjoyable coaching experiences of his life.

Opposing teams' scouting reports centered on stopping Maxiell, who was a decent
outside shooter and was known for taking high-percentage shots.

But Maxiell drew crowds with his thunderous dunks, and Johnson said fans could
expect to see three or four "amazing" rim rattlers each game. One time, against
rival R.L. Turner High, Maxiell took off from the free-throw line to dunk a
teammate's missed shot.

Maxiell continued to make the highlight reels at the University of Cincinnati,
where he played in 129 consecutive games despite countless evening flights to

morning flight to get back to Cincinnati for practice as a sophomore.

"He was absolutely wonderful," said Bob Huggins, who coached Maxiell with the
Bearcats. "There aren't many guys who you have for four years that bring it
every day. And he brought it every day."

Just this past off-season, Maxiell dedicated himself to getting in better shape
. He lost 30 pounds during the summer. And he worked on his game back at Newman
Smith, as he and Jazz point guard Deron Williams had Johnson open the gym at
night.

friends he knew, but it was just amazing to see this guy calling me every day,
asking if the gym would be open," Johnson said. "It just says a lot about him
with his career and where he wants it to go."

張的是這傢伙每天都打電話給我，問我體育館會不會開放，"Johnson說。"這一切可以說明
