Road trip ends in frustration

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A slew of missed free throws and missed defensive
assignments by the Detroit Pistons ultimately led to them missing out on an
opportunity to cap their West Coast trip off with a win.

Instead, the Pistons head back home following a disappointing 105-95 loss to
the Sacramento Kings to close out their five-game West Coast trip.

"We shot ourselves in the foot," said Pistons center Rasheed Wallace, who had
17 points and 12 rebounds. "We let them hang around. We know we're a better
ball club. We let them hang around, and they had help from the 'magnificent
trio.'"

That "trio" Wallace was referring to was the game's officials, whose foul
call against Wallace late in the fourth quarter s（eemed to change everything.

Detroit was trailing 96-92 when official Scott Wall called a foul against
Wallace, who was guarding Brad Miller on a drive to the basket.

Sheed thought the call came late.

"Tay was halfway down the court, and then he decided to call it," Wallace
said. "It's crazy. But that's our fault because we let them hang around, and
even if they would have called that foul, if we hadn't let them hang around,
it would have made no difference."

Upset with the call, Wallace ran toward the Pistons bench and then toward the
scorer's table -- away from where the call was made -- which is when official
Joe Forte whistled Wallace for his first technical foul of the season.

After the game, Pistons coach Flip Saunders was bothered by what he saw as a
double standard by the officials in how they treat Wallace.

For example, Kings forward and ex-Piston Mikki Moore was whistled for a foul
in the first half. Immediately after the call was made, Moore sprinted all
the way to the other end of the court and was visibly bothered by what he
thought was a bad call.

"But a lot of times, he's (Wallace) refereed a lot different in situations,"

However, it wasn't just the late-game technicals that did the Pistons in.

Their inability to keep Kings point guard Beno Udrih (23 points, six assists)
from penetrating into the lane was a factor, as well as the Pistons shooting
a season-low 57.6 percent from the free throw line.

"Those things add up in close games," said Detroit's Chauncey Billups, who
returned to the lineup after missing the two previous games with a left knee
injury.

After leading for most of the first half, a 17-3 Sacramento run in the third
gave the Kings a five-point lead. Detroit was able to inch a little closer in
the quarter as Tayshaun Prince's put-back basket cut Sacramento's lead to
75-72 going into the fourth quarter.

The Pistons were able to regain the lead in the fourth following back-to-back
baskets by Flip Murray, the last giving Detroit an 87-86 lead with 6:09 to
play. A 3-pointer by Francisco Garcia put the Kings back on top, but only
briefly because Jason Maxiell's dunk tied the score at 89.

Detroit wasn't able to get any closer than that, which dropped their record
to 6-4 overall and just 2-3 on the West Coast trip.

While a couple of victories is respectable for most teams when they come out
West, the Pistons were far from satisfied.

"I'm very disappointed," Billups said. "Every one of these games was winnable
for us. For us to go back 2-3, it's a bad road trip in my eyes."

Those same officials, though, gave the Pistons ample chance at the free-throw
line. But in a less-ferocious-than-ever, one-third empty Arco Arena, the
Pistons left 14 points there, shooting 19-for-33.

"That hurt a lot," Wallace said. "This is one of those games we shot the
worst in a while. Rip missed some, I missed some, Nazr missed some."

Center Nazr Mohammed was 0-for-4. Hamilton, who scored 16, went 6-for-9.
Tayshaun Prince missed two of his four.
