LAS VEGAS -- In one sense, rookie Will Blalock was happy to see Mateen Cleaves
walk into Spring Valley High gym here Friday morning, toward the end of the
Pistons' summer-league practice.

Fayetteville, N.C.

Indeed, Miami and Denver were both thinking about calling him up before he
injured his ankle. Instead of being on a playoff roster, and potentially
winning a ring with the Heat, his season was effectively over.

Plus, the Pistons are going to give Blalock every opportunity to win a roster
spot.

"We really appreciate Mateen coming out," said Pistons assistant coach Don
Zierden, who is running the summer team. "It's good to have an extra body out
there, especially a guy with his experience who is a proven winner. I think

anywhere from the late in the first round to the middle of the second round.
Instead, he fell to the last spot.

"That was tough, but it couldn't get any better for me as far as the situation
I'm in," said Blalock, who is 6-foot and strongly built. "Detroit needs a
backup point guard and I feel I can fill that role. Even though that was a long
night, waiting to hear my name and all of that, it paid off."

Division I) last season, but he's made his reputation with his floor leadership
and defensive toughness.

Former Pistons forward Maurice Evans was a spectator on the first day of the
Las Vegas Summer League games Thursday.

Evans, at his request, was traded by the Pistons to the Lakers on draft day for
the 51st pick, Cheikh Samb .

"I called Joe after the trade to thank him," Evans said. "He moved me to a

has trimmed about 10 pounds from his 6-7 frame, without losing any power.

his debut.
