LAS VEGAS -- At first, the news of Ben Wallace's departure saddened Pistons
power forward Jason Maxiell. After all, Wallace was Maxiell's mentor, motivator
and tormentor throughout his rookie season in 2005-06.

Maxiell was going to miss him. Shoot, he was even going to miss lugging
Wallace's boombox to every game -- which was Maxiell's rookie responsibility
last season.

His outlook brightened, though, after he talked to Wallace last week.

Maxiell said. "He said, 'Go play hard in summer league and come to camp next
year ready to go to work.' That's what I plan to do."

Maxiell said that, though he and the team hated to see him leave, there were no
hard feelings.

"Ben had to look out for what was best for him and his family," he said. "He
doesn't have that many years left in his career, so he had to take care of his
family, no matter what they say about him stealing a check or whatever. You

Maxiell, who played in 26 games last season, has a legitimate chance to be the
fourth big man in coach Flip Saunders' frontcourt rotation. Maxiell has cut 15
pounds off his 6-foot-7 frame and, with his ability to score off the dribble
and with his post-up game, he could help shore up one of the Pistons' primary
deficiencies -- points in the lane.

It is clear the coaching staff is done babying Maxiell. He scored 15 points in
the team's summer-league opener against the Wizards on Saturday and he had some
dominant stretches in a scrimmage against Golden State on Sunday.

going to be bringing energy off the bench. But he's got to bring it every night

The Pistons are also working with Maxiell on his free-throw shooting. He made
just 14 of 42 free throws last season, after being a career 65-percent
free-throw shooter at Cincinnati.

"He has the ability to get to the basket, and when you do that, you are going

He missed 6 of 11 against the Wizards, but made 8 of 10 in the scrimmage
against Golden State.

The other facet of his game under construction this summer is his passing. He
has been somewhat of a Bermuda Triangle in the post -- the ball goes in and
never comes back out.

"He has to learn that when he makes his move and he gets under the basket, he

Maxiell has displayed plenty of defensive muscle, though. Against the Wizards,
second-year forward Andray Blatche scored 10 quick points against Amir Johnson
before Maxiell switched on to him. Blatche only scored six points in a bit more
than two quarters against Maxiell.
不過J-Max已經展現許多防守的拼勁和肌肉，在面對巫師的比賽中，二年級前鋒A.

Monday, he was set to face his toughest test -- guarding Suns forward Amare
Stoudemire.

"Right now, I am just here to work on my game and practice hard," Maxiell said.
"I know we don't really have a solid low-post player on our team and I believe
that I can step in and do that."
