LAS VEGAS -- Tony Ronzone, the Pistons' director of basketball operations and
chief international scout, has a story about Dallas Mavericks center DeSagana
Diop.

"I was working for Dallas and when he first came to this country, I picked him

The Pistons are hoping Ronzone will be able to tell a similar story in a couple
of years about 7-foot-1, 195-pound Cheikh Samb, a center from Senegal drafted
51st overall in last month's draft who was acquired from the Lakers for Maurice
Evans.

"There's going to be a learning curve with him," said Don Zierden, a Pistons

teach length and he anticipates very well. He understands the game and he tries
to do the right thing."

Samb, who played just one season in the second-level pro league in Spain, made
quite a debut here. In the Pistons' 80-67 victory over Washington on Saturday,
Samb had nine points and nine rebounds. Of his four field goals, one was a dunk
and the others were perimeter jump shots. He was credited with three blocks,
but had six.

He did struggle with the physical play, picking up eight personal fouls (you

rotations.

Jose Marie Berrocal, an assistant coach with Samb's Barcelona team, is in Las
Vegas and helps with some of the language issues in practice and during games.

Samb, who will turn 21 in October, was discovered at a basketball camp in Paris
when he was 17. He basically went as a tag-along with his older brother,
Mamadou, who was a prospect.

"Their momma said they were a package deal, so we signed them both to our club,

did not play. He practiced but did not play in any games."

The next year, Cheikh not only played, but he began attracting more attention
than his brother. He averaged 9.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and led the league in
blocks, averaging 3.1, in 29 games.

It was Berrocal who brought Samb to the attention of NBA scouts. He sent game
tapes to several teams, including the Pistons. President Joe Dumars saw the
tapes a couple of months before the draft and dispatched Ronzone, who already
was familiar with the Samb family, and his scouting team to gather more data.

to Las Vegas. He was very surprised, very happy."

The Pistons have gone this route before, drafting or signing raw foreign talent
, with the hopes of sending them overseas for a couple of years and getting
back an NBA-ready player. It didn't work in the cases of Ratko Varda or Andreas
Glyniadakis.

But by all accounts, it looks like they got it right this time.

"He's going to play in this league," Ronzone said. "I really believe that."
