at his age, his skills are beginning to deteriorate. He relies too much on

has a great deal of value on the market now that he has shown he can do

The focus of Detroit’s offseason will be the re-signing of Ben Wallace. Big
Ben had another stellar season capturing the NBA Defensive Player of the year
award yet again - marking the fourth time in the last five years he has earned
the award. Wallace, the only player to finish the season among the league's
top 10 in rebounds, blocks and steals, is just the second player to win the
award four times. Dikembe Mutombo is the only other four-time winner. Wallace
also became only the fifth player in NBA history to record 100 blocks and 100
steals in five consecutive seasons. But the stats, despite copious amounts of
blocks, steals and rebounds, don't even begin to tell the whole story. So much
of what Ben Wallace contributes never finds its way onto a stat sheet: the
loose balls he is able to tip to his teammates; the shots he alters if not
actually blocks; the offensive fouls he draws. For that reason, the Pistons
should do all they possibly can to hold onto him. Although his free-throw
shooting and lack of an offensive game became a big issue in the post-season,
the fact remains that Wallace is integral to the team’s success. - Tommy Beer

Ben Wallace. Yes, I know, I'm a heathen and should be banished to only the most
fiery pits of hell, but the reality is Wallace's contributions have gone down
in each of the last three seasons. Is he still a fantastic player? Absolutely.
Is he still one of the best defenders in the league? Of course. But...giving a
maximum contract to a player who has had three consecutive seasons of
decreasing productivity is not using one's brain - that would be purely an
emotional decision, something Joe Dumars isn't prone to doing. Think of it this
way: is it smart to be paying Wallace max money in five years, considering the
trend? Probably not. The reality is that Wallace's value is sky-high at the
moment and it's the best possible time to cash him in for some young prospects.
There will be a lot of teams interested - Dumars should just pick the package
that fits the team the best. Ideally that would be a young point guard, a
reasonably defensive center, and a veteran swingman. Maybe not all of those
things, but that would be ideal. Jason Maxiell and Amir Johnson really look
ready to step up and contribute a little bit. - Jason Fleming

Detroit is one of those teams that doesn't need to make much moves this
offseason in trades. The primary concern is re-signing Ben Wallace. And there
is no question Dumars will do everything to make that happen. With the
contracts of Kelvin Cato, Dale Davis, and Lindsey Hunter coming off the books,
it will help open up dollars for Wallace. So there is three open spots right
there. But the Pistons additions will come via free agency, not by making

The Pistons may have to deal Chauncey Billups. Yes, I know that he is the
engine that makes them run. Yes, he can shoot well and he is a strong point
guard. However, the long term deal that he will be seeking (upwards of 8
million dollars) may be too much for the Pistons to pay. Billups has done
remarkable things for Detroit and is one of the reasons why they've been so
successful. He has taken his career to new heights and now is well respected
throughout the league. His value has never been higher. That's why it may be
time to unload him and bring in a quicker and a point guard who can get to the
rim at will. One of the reasons why the team didn't fare as well in the
playoffs as expected is because they relied on too many jump shots. Nobody on
the team is capable of driving to the basket with consistency and making good
things happen. With a jump shooting team, it is essential that somebody get
into the lane and allow shooters to get open looks. A few players who may be
available who could fill this void are Ben Gordon (Chicago), Jason Terry (
Dallas - free agent), Stephon Marbury (New York), Allen Iverson (Philadelphia)
and Mike Bibby (Sacramento). Out of this list, JT would be my top choice. This
year in Dallas, he has made a believer out of many with his quickness and
shooting touch. I don't know if Bibby is available but the Kings may be willing
to part via a sign-and-trade.

Like I said in question number 1, they don't really need to add or lose many
pieces. The one move that they MAY want to consider looking at is Rasheed
Wallace. Wallace is one of those guys who handles good times well, but can
become a problem when facing adversity. The team should evaluate where they
think they are at and if they have some rebuilding on the horizon, if for
example they lose Ben Wallace, then maybe they consider moving Rasheed while

Joe Dumars has gone on record as saying he intends on bringing his top 6
players back next year. Only one of the six has the possibility to ruin that
intention. Team captain Ben Wallace is an unrestricted free agent, and the
Chicago Bulls seem to be the leading candidate to obtain Wallace if he doesn't
come back to the Motor City. If it appears that Wallace will not be returning,
working a sign and trade with the Bulls or another team makes sense. - Matt

It's a hard question, because no one wants to see another Darko Milicic story
happen, and everyone is concerned that this is what might happen if Carlos
Delfino is let go. He still makes lots of mental mistakes and is inconsistent,
but he did show progress this year, and the whole Milicic debacle proved that
all Darko needed was more consistent playing time, so the same might be true
with Delfino.
