3 - Which players should they look to acquire in trade or free agency?

The Pistons need depth, young depth. I don't think signing another dinosaur,
like the last two big signings Dumars has made (McDyess and Davis), is the best
answer here. Like I mentioned earlier, they should look for the best
sign-and-trade offers for Big Ben. How about to Sacramento for Brad Miller,
Kevin Martin and a first round pick? Or to the LA Clippers for Chris Kaman and

Possibly make a run at Nate Robinson or look to sign Speedy Claxton to a

Making a move for Brevin Knight would be a very good idea. If Charlotte was
interested in Ben Wallace - not sure they would be since they have been
reluctant to make a move like that so far in their short existence - getting
back Primoz Brezec, Knight, and perhaps a future lottery-protected first round
pick would be something Dumars would really have to consider. Another possible
trade partner could be a team like the Toronto Raptors - the Pistons could get
Charlie Villanueva and perhaps another piece. - Jason Fleming

Like noted earlier, the Pistons need backcourt depth in a hurry. Billups and
Hamilton do it all in Detroit. But even these guys need a break now and again.
This isn't a knock on Tony Delk but the Pistons need to grab some fresh young
legs to keep things running in Detroit. Someone like Jannero Pargo, of the
Chicago Bulls would be a good fit. He is young, has shown that he can make the
best of a bad situation (was constantly in and out of Scott Skiles line up),
and can be a cheap free agent signing. The kid is a workhorse and plays tough
"D". Also adding a guy like the Indiana Pacers Fred Jones is a good look for
Detroit. Jones is athletic, can play lockdown defense, and would compliment the
Pistons backcourt nicely. Think about it Joe. - Wendell Maxey, Jr.

Without question, the Pistons should make a serious run at Jason Terry. He is
what the Pistons are looking for in a point guard. He is quick, can shoot, and
most importantly, he can get to the rim. With the season that he's having,
Dallas will try to lock him up quickly. But if Joe Dumars makes the right pitch
, i.e. no splitting time with Devon Harris, JT could be wearing a Pistons'
uniform next season. Money may be a factor but its the price of doing business.
I see nothing but upside in this young man. Open the purse, make the right
sales pitch and bring him to Motown...

Otherwise, the Pistons should try to make a run at a back-up center. I really
like Joel Pryzbilla in Portland. Although he has stated that he wants to remain
in Portland, if the right offer were to come along (like from a contender),
he'll be out of the Rose Garden in a heartbeat. Pryzbilla can rebound, block
shots, and give you hustle points. He is a good pickup and can solidify the
frontline. Imagine having Wallace and Wallace as starters and McDyess and
Pryzbilla coming off the bench. Something to think about.

There are several guys in this year's free agent crop who play the rugged ball
the Pistons rely on. For starters I think Bobby Jackson would be a great fit
off the bench to spell Billups. Also guys like Darius Songaila, Matt Harpring,
Melvin Ely, Adrian Griffin, Reggie Evans...The list is pretty long when you are
looking for role players only.

Obviously, the Pistons have to look at signing Ben Wallace as the team’s top
priority. If the Pistons make no changes to its current roster, it would still
have one of the best five teams in the league next season. If you take Big Ben
out of that equation, that changes somewhat. He’s that important. The team’s
second order of business must be adding depth to its bench. Dice has been a
reliable backup in the frontcourt. Lindsey Hunter is also a free agent this
summer, and the team might consider an upgrade considering some of the
available point guards (Bobby Jackson, Speedy Claxton). Resigning Hunter to a
veteran’s minimum would not be a bad move either. The Pistons need a
consistent, backup scorer in the backcourt when Hamilton or Billups need a

Both point guards Tony Delk and Lindsey Hunter are UFA?s this summer. Expect
one of the two to be brought back. Detroit should make a run at Speedy Claxton
to be Chauncey Billups backup, as that would give them a dependable rotation
player, and insurance if Billups were to go down.

Two years ago, Joe D took a chance on an injury plagued veteran who many were
skeptical about. That veteran, Antonio McDyess, has played 96% of Detroit's
regular season games, and has been a solid contributor. Dumars needs to do the
same with another veteran in Penny Hardaway. Hardaway hasn't averaged double
figures since the 02-03 season, but is probably the healthiest he has been
since that season. Hardaway has been working out in Houston with John Lucas,
and would help this Detroit squad that does have depth issues. - Matt Lowy

The first order of business is resigning Ben Wallace. Even if his role gets
smaller and smaller by the year, he's still valuable to teach Maxiell the ropes
. He did an incredible job with Darko, who was his natural replacement, and
he'll have to do some of the same magic with Maxiell, who already has the
hustle, but maybe doesn't have the same toughness and timing yet. They also
have Lindsey Hunter and Alex Acker, and if Hunter is still willing to go one
more season, maybe Detroit could keep him. I've seen too little of Acker to say
that he's a keeper or a goner.

Other than that, Detroit needs penetrators and a second guard. Hunter is great
on defense and knocks down some shots, but the offense gets less creative and
slower with him around. Bobby Jackson would be a good fit. For the disruptive,
penetrating force, maybe Latrell Sprewell and Bonzi Wells could work, even if
they've been labeled "rotten apples" in other places. - Adriano Albuquerque
