Like the Spurs, the Pistons are a team that needs few changes. If they can
re-sign Wallace they still have a championship team. - Bill Ingram

One thing became clear during the playoffs this season – The Pistons players

thought they would.  Flip Saunders opened up the offense and the players seemed
to enjoy the ride during the regular season.  But once the playoffs kicked into
high gear, you could tell they needed the tough love of Larry Brown getting on
them about every defensive possession.  In retrospect, the Pistons may still be
playing if they had kept Larry Brown in town for a few more seasons.  As a
result, there will be enormous pressure on Flip Saunders next year (that is if

Rasheed Wallace is quite the character isn't he? Love him or hate him you can't
deny that he's entertaining. Add to that his teammates will all tell you he's
the best teammate ever and there really shouldn't be much more to tell. He's a
productive player on the court - though yes, he doesn't play to all of his
strengths all of the time - people like him...yet so much of NBA fandom
dislikes because of the perception that is painted of him by a media he doesn't
enjoy. Just keep in mind the existence of personal biases in the media the next

It's good to see that Joe Dumars has Flip Saunders' back. There is no reason
Saunders shouldn't be back roaming the sidelines in Detroit next year. Flip
coached in Larry Brown's shadow all year long, especially in the Playoffs,
which is not the ideal situation for anyone to run a team in. Next year will be
interesting. We will find out if Saunders flops or Flip makes his own mark in
Detroit. Know this though: Detroit will be looking for revenge for what
happened with the Miami Heat. It's all about the big payback for the Pistons. -

End of an era? Hardly. For 82 games this season, the Pistons were the best team
in the league. Even though they "collapsed," Detroit still came within 2 games
of reaching the NBA Finals. Although disappointing to themselves, they still
had an outstanding season and the causes for their shortcomings can easily be
addressed and corrected. I can point to three main reasons why they Pistons are
at home watching the Finals instead of playing in them.

1) Defense. Although the Pistons did play good defense at times this season,
they did not come close to playing the level of defensive toughness that had
become their signature. Ben Wallace expressed his frustrations with the
defensive effort time and time again but to no avail. Perhaps, both coach and
players alike believed that they could make offense their staple while playing
just enough defense to win. We all know now that type of thinking was Fool's
Gold. Don't get me wrong offensive efficiency is fun and pretty and all that
but when its time to win a championship, it begins and ends with defense. The
Pistons need to find a way to get back to that lockdown style of bruising,
aggravating, and pressure defense that started this remarkable run four years
ago.
    1)防守，儘管活塞本季某些時候確實有拿出堅強的防守，但他們絕大部分的時間的表

2) Coaching. Flip Saunders has proven himself to be a good coach (albeit not a
great one) and he's also a so-called, "Player's Coach." That's all well and
good but the coach is not there to make friends nor is he there to let the
inmates run the asylum. The coach is there to impose order, prepare his team
for their opponents night in and night out, and to make crucial adjustments in
a playoff series.

Saunders make a few critical mistakes this season. First, he didn't require the
team to play the type of stringent defense that Larry Brown required. He tried
to put his stamp on the team by making them a better on the offensive end. And
he did that, however, the defense fell to the background and the rest is
history. Coach Saunders must find a way to have a fluent offense and a lockdown
defense. It can be done. Secondly, the starters played entirely too many
minutes during the regular season and playoffs which by necessity means that
the reserves were used sparingly and were not ready to contribute when they
were most needed. Maurice Evans, Tony Delk, Lindsey Hunter, Dale Davis, and
even Kelvin Cato could have provided more minutes so that the starters would
have something left in the tank during the NBA's "real season." In the Miami
series, the team had nothing left after that grueling series against the Cavs.
And it showed. Finally, Coach Saunders failed to make the necessary adjustments
in the series against Cleveland and Miami. Both Mike Brown and Pat Riley did a
wonderful job of exposing the Pistons' weaknesses - lack of speed, and poor
rebounding - while Saunders did little to combat this. The Pistons won the
series against the Cavs by sheer talent and experience. They were fortunate to
win two games against the red-hot Heat.

Fortunately for the Pistons, this was Saunders' first season as coach of a
perennial powerhouse team in the Eastern Conference. He now knows what to
expect, i.e. the pressure and the constant adjustments. Because he is a smart
man, I am positive that he will take these shortcomings and turn them around in
the 2006-2007 campaign.

3) Finally, the Pistons were a victim of circumstance. They ran into two of the
hottest teams (Cavs and the Heat) who were peeking at the right time. LeBron
James has shown his naysayers that he can perform and perform well in the
playoffs. He absolutely deserves all of the attention that he gets. Next year,
he will be a virtually unstoppable force. Single-handedly, LBJ almost beat the
Pistons. In the fourth quarter of Game 7, he showed that even 21 year olds run
out of gas.
    3)最後，活塞是不利形勢下的犧牲者，他們連續兩個系列賽都遇上了正好調整至最佳
狀況的超火熱球隊(騎士和熱火)。LBJ已經向他的反對者展現了他不僅可以率隊搶進季後賽

The Heat looked like the best team in the league with D Wade and Shaq providing
that one-two punch and with the role players taking up the slack. Also, with
Pat Riley commanding the ship, they appeared to be on their way to Miami's
first title.

In the end, the Pistons got too full of themselves, stopped doing the things
that made them champions, and were simply too damned worn out to compete with
the well-rested Heat. Next year, I expect the Pistons to be back to their

It is amazing how winning and losing affect the perception of things. Right now
there is a feeling that the Pistons need to make changes but the reality is
that as long as they get Wallace to accept a reasonable deal the team is still
in great shape. You can't make it to the finals every season and there is no
reason to blow up the Pistons quite yet. - Brian Robinson

Detroit in not appearing in the NBA Finals for the third straight season
underachieved this year, despite winning 64 games. The expectations will be the
same next season, and the East is only getting more competitive. The Central
division will be more competitive as Cleveland, Indiana, and possibly Chicago
will be gunning for that title. Can this team stay competitive on a
 championship level without Ben Wallace? We may just find out this season. -

Guys are worried that after Miami and Cleveland figured out Detroit and beat
them seven times in this year's playoffs, it's Doomsday in the Palace of Auburn
Hills. Everyone is crying out about breaking up the starting five and
rebuilding. People, we're talking about a team that won 64 games in the regular
season and was two wins away from its third consecutive Finals. There are
changes that need to be made, but they're not that radical.
    有人在本季季後賽邁阿密熱火和克里夫蘭識破了活塞的戲法並擊敗他們七次後就開始

The first one is not new: get the bench more involved. Coach Flip Saunders
relied the starters way too much and never got the second unit going. Second:
get Delfino and Amir Johnson on the floor more. It's the same as the first ones
, but these two kids will give the Pistons the explosion and extra options they
need. Third: either keep the hunger the entire season or at least build it
through the season. The Pistons started out too fast, then stopped playing like
they meant it. Their fire wore out when they became mainstream. So, if they
can't stay hungry throughout, just follow the same recipe as the last two
seasons and make progress throughout the season. - Adriano Albuquerque
