[外電] MICHAEL ROSENBERG: Artest tells kids there's no regrets

He needed no introduction. But he gave himself one anyway.
    他根本就不需要自我介紹，但他還是簡單地說了一下。

"I'm Ron Artest from New York City," he told the children from Detroit. "Feel
free to ask me questions -- outside sports."
    他向來自底特律的孩子們說"我是來自紐約市的阿泰，放輕鬆，你們有什麼問題儘管問

Outside of sports.

This is why Artest was here, at the Mathis Community Center on Detroit's
northwest side: to talk about issues outside of sports. These were Artest's
first public comments in the state of Michigan since the infamous brawl at the
Palace of Auburn Hills in November, 2004-- that, too, was outside of sports,
and it ultimately landed him five days of community service for his role.
    這就是為什麼阿泰會到底特律西北邊的Mathis社區活動中心這來的原因：來談論非關

This was Day One.

Artest served on a panel of men who either were role models, former criminals
or both. It featured many warnings about inner-city life and dreams for the
children. Snippets like: "I got arrested when I was 12 years old for taking a
gun to school -- a gun I stole from my grandma." And: "I see greatness in each
and every one of you. You are our future. You are royalty." And: "I sold crack
when I was 13."
    阿泰是一群由教導他們如何從事社區服務以及之前因為犯罪而必須從事社區服務的人
所組成的社區服務隊的成員，那可以讓孩子們得到許多關於社會中低階層的生活和夢想的

That last line came from Ron Artest of New York City. He said he sold the crack
one time, then told his cousin he couldn't bring himself to do it again. (And
he said the cousin, whom he identified only as "Aaron," later had his head
beaten in and hasn't been the same since.)
    壓軸是來自紐約市的阿泰，他說他曾經賣過一次純古柯鹼，之後就告訴他表弟說他不

Artest's parents separated when he was a kid. He said he was frequently in
trouble after that and was suspended from school at some point every year. He
straightened himself out by pouring his heart into basketball.

為某些事情而被學校禁止到校上課。後來他將全副心力放在籃球場上，藉以矯正自己不當

He is now one of the best and hardest-working basketball players in the world.
Of course, he still gets suspended every year. After the brawl, he was
suspended for the rest of 2004-2005. He came back, swore his allegiance to the
Indiana Pacers, then asked for a trade. He was suspended again. He came to
Detroit as a member of the Sacramento Kings.
    他現在是世界上最認真打球的籃球員之一。當然，他仍每年遭到禁賽。在奧本山大亂
鬥之後，他'04-'05年球季剩下的比賽全部被禁賽。他回來後向印地安那溜馬隊表示說會誓

If this community service is supposed to be punishment for Artest, it is not.
Artest, an extremely charitable fellow, loves being with kids. After the panel
discussion, he jumped around on a moonwalk -- one of those big inflatable
bouncy things you see at carnivals -- with several kids, then went inside to
play the NBA Live video game.
    如果你認為這次社區服務的活動對於阿泰來說是個懲罰，那你可就錯了。阿泰是個極
度善良的傢伙，而且熱愛與孩子們相處。在社區服務隊的討論會後，他就跳起了月球漫步
舞 -- 你最常在嘉年華會上看到人家跳的熱情舞蹈中的一種　-- 和幾個孩子們一同熱舞，
之後又和孩子們一起打NBA Live的電玩。

And if this is supposed to make Artest re-think his actions that Friday night
in November 2004, well, forget that, too. He said he has no regrets. When one
of the kids asked Artest about the brawl, he said the moral of the story was
that "if you have to protect yourself, protect yourself."
    而這社區服務會不會讓阿泰重新思考他在'04年11月那個星期五晚上的不當行為呢？嗯
，就別再提了。他說他完全沒有悔意，當其中一個孩子問到阿泰關於大亂鬥的事情時，他
表示這個故事的寓意是"如果你必須保護自己，那不用懷疑，保護好你自己就對了。"

In other words... fight back? Use force?
    換句話說...反擊？使用武(暴)力？

Didn't Artest make that mistake at the Palace?
    阿泰在奧本山大亂鬥中沒有犯錯嗎？

"I never say it was mistake," Artest said Wednesday. "Somebody started trouble,
and I always say I ended it. He started it and I ended it. But I never say it
was a mistake. Like I told the kids, if somebody starts trouble with you, if
they're talking or if somebody hits you, you always have to protect yourself.
And if you can avoid it, I will always tell somebody to avoid it."
    阿泰星期三說道"我從不認為我做錯了，某個人啟動了混亂的情況，而我總認為我是把
事情解決的那個人。但我從不認為我做錯了，就像我跟孩子們說的，如果某個人找你麻煩
，如果他們說你壞話或有某個人攻擊你，你都應該保護好你自己。而如果你能避免衝突，

During the discussion, Artest drank water out of a blue plastic cup, which was
appropriate. As far as he was concerned, a plastic cup caused all this -- not
Artest's hard foul on Ben Wallace, or Wallace's overheated response, or Artest
lying on the scorer's table, doing a radio interview as the crowd jeered, or
Artest running into the stands and grabbing a fan (the wrong one, it turned out
).
    在談話之中，阿泰從一個很適合奧本山大亂鬥事件的藍色塑膠杯中喝水。就像他所想
的，是一個塑膠杯引起所有的事情 -- 而不是阿泰對於大班的惡性犯規，或大班過度反應

He said he was on a "good path" until "somebody got in the way by the name of
John Green." John Green is the guy from West Bloomfield who threw the cup. But
then, in a classic slice of Ron-Ron, Artest said this:
    他說他的行為都還很正常直到"某個叫做J.Green的傢伙出現"，來自西花田的Green就
是那個把杯子丟向阿泰的傢伙。只是，典型的阿泰流反應又出現了，阿泰說：

"I like John Green. He's real. I have no problem with John Green. We've gotta
go out and get some dinner sometime. I was trying to get him on my album, but I
couldn't get in touch with him.... I don't have a problem with John Green. He
did something real stupid, but a lot of people do stupid things.
    我喜歡Green，他是個很真的人。我跟Green之間沒事了，我跟他應該找機會一起出去
吃頓飯聚一聚。我還想把他加進我的專輯裡，但我沒辦法聯絡上他...我跟他之間真的沒事
了，他幹了些真的很愚蠢的事，但大部分的人都會犯錯不是？

"He's just a grown man who did something stupid."
    "他只是一個不小心犯錯的正常人罷了。"
