DUMARS: No, because there is nothing else over an 82-game season. Constant effort is what you have to have night in and night out. “Guys, it’s not good enough to do it for two weeks. You’ve got to do it for the next two months. You’ve got to be consistent.” That’s why I have such respect – and I’m going to deviate a little bit – it’s why I have such respect for what Jerry Sloan has done at Utah for so many years. He gets a constant effort out of his guys year after year after year. That’s what we’re trying to get to. It’s nothing magical. There’s no secret. If you’re talented enough, then it becomes, can you play hard constantly over several months. Because if you do, you’re going to win a lot of games and be in position to have a great playoff run. LANGLOIS: Since you came into the league, money has changed the dynamics of the league dramatically. Was it easier for a coach to get a consistent, sustained effort out of players in those days or has nothing much changed in that regard? DUMARS: The money has had an impact, no question. It’s human nature that money would have an impact. So you have to start trying to motivate people beyond just the money. That’s about, “OK, you have the money. Here’s the contract. That’s taken care of. Now, here’s what I need.” It’s give and take. You want to take care of guys and make sure all these guys get their contracts taken care of, but then after that you have to turn and face the guys and, “OK , here’s what I need. I’ve taken care of you, here’s what I need now. And what I need is a constant, concerted effort. I need you to play at a high level , a championship level, and keep us in contention here for years.” LANGLOIS: Every coach I’ve ever talked to about that has said that he can only do so much to demand effort but that it’s so much easier when his best players , his leaders, buy in and demand the same from their teammates. Are your best players also your leaders in that regard? DUMARS: The three captains – Chauncey, Rip and Tayshaun – for sure are three guys who are about the right things. They represent the right things. All three of them are unselfish. All three of them are good people. All three of them are the type of guys you want standing up as your captains. And when you have that, it’s so much easier to get your team headed in the right direction. Because if your leadership is about the right things, it’s hard for other guys not to be. And if they are, they’re going to stand out like a sore thumb and have a short life here, to be frank with you. LANGLOIS: Are Nazr Mohammed and Flip Murray still works in progress as far as fitting in and contributing at the level you expected of them when you identified them as the free agents you coveted? DUMARS: Absolutely. We’ve not gotten the best of them. It would be naive to think you’re going to get the best of them after four weeks. I look at it no differently when we brought those guys in as when we brought Chauncey in, or Rip in, or Tayshaun in. If people can get past short-term memory, we didn’t have the best of Chauncey after four weeks. It took some time for him to grow into who he became. And we didn’t get the best of Rip after four weeks or Tayshaun. It would be unfair and naive to think you’re going to get the best of Nazr Mohammed and Flip Murray after four weeks. Same thing with Delfino. This is his third year here and he’s really starting to come on now. That’s kind of what happens. This is kind of a right-now world and if it doesn’t happen in two weeks, then, Oh, my God – it’s a failure. But that’s more the hype than the reality of it. LANGLOIS: So you still feel as strongly about those two as when you signed them ? DUMARS: Oh, absolutely. Again, Chauncey struggled his first year here, especially the first few months, trying to get used to Rick (Carlisle) and what was going on. LANGLOIS: His assist numbers, and his assists-to-turnovers ratio, have improved dramatically over the seasons here. DUMARS: He has become a very efficient point guard. I keep up with the assists-to-turnover ratio. It’s like 8:1 – it’s crazy. But it took some time to get there. I remember the first four months he was here when people wondered . It takes some time. LANGLOIS: I know you take everything that happens in preseason with a grain of salt, but Jason Maxiell had an awfully good preseason. Is he just a victim of circumstances right now. DUMARS: That’s all it is. Maxiell is a victim of circumstances – and the circumstances are Rasheed Wallace, Nazr Mohammed, Dale Davis and Antonio McDyess. Those are the circumstances. But I tell you what – I feel very good about having him as the guy, right now, that if we have any slips, if anybody, God forbid, has to go down for a week or two, having that guy ready to step in. Because he showed he was ready for minutes, that if given the opportunity he’ll produce for you. To have a young guy like that waiting in the wings is a pretty good situation to be in.
