clear picture, but we think we've figured out this Eastern Conference.

First thing: Don't let the runt teams, lovable as they are, fool you anymore.

Second thing: The game is still about defense and quality size, which is why
one team is starting to break away from the pack.

And finally: Those first two conclusions are subject to re-evaluation, because
this is still the mild, mild East we're talking about.

Still, it's hard not to notice that the Detroit Pistons have hit their stride
with a five-game win streak (entering last night's encounter with Toronto), and
where it stops, nobody knows. If this were one of those easy equations --
whoever has the biggest toys wins -- they'd probably run away and hide with the
conference very soon. That will be very interesting to watch: When March opens,
the Pistons play 10 of 14 on the road, including five out West and two in Texas
. If they get through that, they can get through anything.

The most impressive thing about them, however, has been the play of their big
men. If you haven't been paying attention, they've gone 9-2 since Chris Webber
has been put in the starting lineup. He's averaging 14 points and eight
rebounds in those 11 games -- not exactly the 20-and-10 guy he was just a year
ago, but good enough, because he can still pass for profit with anybody.

and it so happens they hammered the Lakers and Cavs in those games, holding
both to 78 points.

.684. There's something missing, and this is it: James isn't nearly as dominant
as he was a year ago, and he is a reluctant leader -- though the rout of Miami
was a powerful statement. The other good sign is that Sasha Pavlovic's career
looks like it's just getting started in Year 4.

mention defense when we're discussing these guys, think about this: The last
four opponents have averaged 54.7 percent shooting, and those three losses (
Raptors, Lakers, Spurs) have come by an average of 17.7 points. They may still
hold on to first place in the Southeast, but they'd better be prepared for
Jamison to be out for five more weeks.

Toronto: Eminently likable, in a quirky, Euro-centric way. The talent is there,
and what nobody figured was that the whole would be better than the sum of its
parts this quickly. Which just tells you why Bryan Colangelo has few peers when
it comes to understanding how the pieces fit. At the very least, the Raptors
appear to be two years ahead of schedule in a three-year rebuilding scheme.

been speculation that this Western tour could determine whether they're going
to pull the trigger on a deal for Pau Gasol. Then there's the requisite injury:
Andres Nocioni has plantar fasciitis.
