Pistons and the McD’s All-American Game

Since 1977, selection to the McDonald’s All-American Team has been one of
the most distinguished honors in prep basketball. The game itself, which
began in 1978, has become the premiere showcase for future NCAA and NBA
stars.

Super-Sized Five: When Chris Webber entered the starting lineup in January,
the Pistons became the only NBA team to currently start former McDonald’s
High School All-Americans at all five positions. Webber played in the 1991
game, followed by Wallace (1993), Billups (1995), Hamilton (1996) and Prince
(1998). Such an occurrence is become increasingly rare as the number of
international stars who did not attend high school in the U.S. make their
presence felt in the NBA, on teams such as … the Golden State Warriors.
Golden State is the only team to currently start four McDonald’s
All-Americans - Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, Al Harrington and Stephen Jackson.
Latvian-born Andris Biendrins is the fifth starter. No wonder the Warriors
have caused fits for the Pistons this year.

It’s in the game: Webber had the best showing of the game among the current
Pistons - and pretty much anyone else. He earned 1991 game MVP honors after
scoring 28 points on 14-of-19 shooting. Webber’s point total is the third
most in game history, tied with Boston’s Paul Pierce and New York’s Eddy
Curry. Former Indiana Pacer Jonathan Bender has the record of 31 points. He
broke Michael Jordan’s 30-point mark.

The other Pistons had solid, if not spectacular, performances. Hamilton and
Prince each scored 10 points, while Wallace had nine. Billups was named to
the McDonald’s All-American Team but missed the game due to injury.
Amir Johnson: The Pistons have an All-American presence on the bench, too.
Amir Johnson played in the game just two years ago. He did not have the best
game, missing all five of his attempts from the field, finishing with one
point. That didn’t stop the Pistons from making him the second (and final,
due to league’s age-minimum requirement) player that the franchise drafted
straight out of high school. The Pistons drafted Korleone Young in 1998 but
he played in only three games.

All-time All-Americans: In addition to the six current players, 29 other
former McDonald’s All-Americans have played at least one game in a Pistons
jersey. Seven of the 35 were original Pistons draft picks - Isiah Thomas,
Allan Houston, Grant Hill, Young, Mateen Cleaves, Prince and Johnson.
Two other McDonald’s All-Americans with Michigan ties were drafted by the
Pistons but never played a game. Eric Turner played in the 1981 McD’s game
and was a Pistons’ second-round draft pick in 1984, but the Flint native and
University of Michigan standout was cut before the season. Another former
Wolverine, Antoine Joubert, was a 1983 McD’s All-American after his playing
days at Detroit Southwestern. He was a sixth-round draft pick in 1987.

As near as I can figure, I’ve done about 3,000 Pistons games in my 31 years
as the radio and television voice of the team, and a finish like the one we
had the other night – when Rasheed Wallace launched that perfect triple from
the other side of half-court – happens once in a blue moon. In fact, I can’
t remember one quite like that. Rasheed’s the one guy I probably would want
shooting that shot, because he really does practice those, whether it’s
gamesmanship with some of the other big men for fun or because he thinks
there might be a time he’ll need to take one. It’s still something that he’
s done before and I’m glad he had the ball in his hands. He gave the Pistons
at least a chance for their million-to-one shot.

From my spot courtside, I had a pretty good vantage point. I felt like he got
it away in time and I could see it was going to get there. As a matter of
fact, it did get there and banged off glass, going down. It was one of the
most unbelievable sights I’ve ever seen. People were stunned. They had just
gone through a 48-minute NBA game and thought the Pistons had been beaten by
three. Instead, they got a chance to go to overtime and had all the momentum
and the crowd – and they weren’t going to lose after that.

I love every game, even after all these years. There are so many great
players on the floor and so many interesting stories. Just look at the Pistons
’ bench alone and the great stories there. You’ve got Flip Murray, who is
obviously very talented when he gets his time. You’ve got Jason Maxiell,
maybe ready to break out and make headlines on a regular basis. You’ve got
Carlos Delfino, acting like a future Manu Ginobili. Or, looking at it the
other way, and beyond Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony, seeing a Nene
playing like a future All-Star. Those things all add up, to me, to great
storylines and real drama. But a game like that one, clearly, is a cut above.

But as I think about the month the Pistons have experienced, I wonder how
much tougher it would have been if they didn’t have their own Roundball One.
I would say that Bill Davidson’s decision to put his team in its own plane
changed everything in the NBA. This recent trip would have been nearly
debilitating had they been traveling commercial. Really, every team in the
league ought to thank the Pistons for the private plane idea. And every fan,
too. The players, I think, don’t have to fight the fatigue factor quite as
much as they would have had they been on the elevator at 6 o’clock the next
morning and out of town on a 7:30 flight and getting set to play the very
next night.

Down to a dozen games left, the playoffs are around the corner
It’s That Time

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The thermometer cracked 80 in Michigan the other day.
The Tigers will be back from Florida in less than a week. The Lions are busy
preparing for the most exciting day of their every season – the NFL draft.
You know what that means: The NBA playoffs are lurking. And the Pistons can
smell it.
“We’re trying to get the wheels moving to be in full drive,” said Rasheed
Wallace, the Piston who most seems to regard the regular season as a staging
ground for the postseason. “We’ve been looking forward to the playoffs all
season, pretty much the majority of veteran players. Last year left a bad
taste in our mouth.”
The Pistons visit Chicago on Thursday night for the second time this season,
and here’s a sure sign that the postseason is closing in: The Ben Wallace
reunion is a distant second to playoff impact in importance.
“It’s always going to be fun to play against him,” Chauncey Billups said
after Wednesday’s practice. “But I think all of that is pretty much over
now. It’s done with.”
連Davis也感冒了？
Wednesday’s infirmary report included Rip Hamilton, Chris Webber and Dale
Davis. None of them practiced, though Hamilton showed up at the practice
facility for treatment before visiting his doctor. Webber and Davis stayed
home but all three were expected to make the trip to Chicago, where their
status would be determined at game time. Pistons coach Flip Saunders did not
talk to reporters after practice.
“It’s beating us up right now,” said Billups, whose health concern remains
his strained left groin that caused him to miss two games last week. “That’
s a good sign that it’s coming right now. Hopefully, it doesn’t affect us
later on.”
