AUBURN HILLS -- There have been times throughout this raggedy up and down
season when Pistons president Joe Dumars felt himself losing patience with his
veteran team.

All those lackadaisical efforts early, those home losses to the Hornets and
Bobcats and Hawks, all the bickering with officials, the technicals, the
suspensions -- there were times Dumars nearly snapped.

Most teams, as they enter the postseason, are worried about tangible things
such as health and overall team efficiency.

The Pistons have some of those concerns, certainly. They rank 20th in scoring
and shooting percentage -- numbers which typically decrease in the postseason.
They have had prolonged scoring droughts, even though they remain the most
efficient offense in terms of assist-turnover ratio.

Better depth

Unlike last season, the Pistons go into the postseason with a fully developed
bench. Where last year's rotation featured the starting unit, plus Antonio
McDyess and Lindsey Hunter, this year's will go at least nine players deep.

"I feel better about us as a whole," Billups said. "Carlos (Delfino) has

Nobody in the organization is looking at this playoff run as a final
opportunity. Dumars does not believe in "windows of opportunity." He will tell
you every season presents its own opportunity, and the goal always is the same.

"Winning a world championship requires a sense of urgency," Dumars said. "That
is a requirement. No team can win a title without it. It has nothing to do with

although all signs point to him re-signing. McDyess could opt out of the final
year of his contract, although the Pistons can and probably will offer him an
extension.
